A Bibliography of Ghurar al-Hikam wa Durar al-Kalim

Nasir al-Din Ansari-Qumi

In the article, first the significance of the speech of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is given. Then the book Ghurar al-Hikam, which is the most comprehensive collection of his short quotations, is under consideration; it is followed by an account of the translations, prefaces, companions, abridgements, and subject indexes provided for it.  The writer first renders a biographical and academic account of the scholarly personality of cAbd al-Wahid al-Amidi al-Tamimi, his teachers and disciples, together with the merits of this great work. Considering the translations of Ghurar, a special tribute is paid to the translation done by Aqa Jamal al-Din Khunsari, which is packed with useful information for each and every hadith: the information provided is concerned with aspects of kalam, hadith, and commentaries on the hadiths collected.  The writer further introduces some of the companions to Ghurar, that is, ’Uyun al-Hikam wal Mawaiz, Al-Jawahir al’Aliyya, and Al-Hikam Min Kalam al-Imam Amir al-Muminin ’Ali. Also some abridgements of Ghurar are noted, among them Sharh-i Sad Kalima-yi Qisar, Kalamat-i Qisar, Talkhis Ghurar al-Hikam, to mention only a few. Finally, the subject indexes to Ghurar are introduced, among them are those arranged by the Muhaddith Urmawi, Tasnif al-Ghurar, Mu’jam Alfaz Ghurar al-Hikam, and so forth.
