Hadith Glimmers in Mulla Sadra’s Tafsir

The writer first gives an introductory account of Mulla Sadra’s Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim. In Chapter One, Mulla Sadra’s various modes of attribution of hadiths to the Prophet and the Ahl al-Bayt are considered. They are as follows: the literal meaning of the verses; determination of the cases of revelation of the verses; the virtues of the suras; the interpretation and commentary of the verses; clarifying the semantic style of the verses, and fixing the precise instances of the verses. Chapter Two is concerned with Mulla Sadra’s hadith scholarship, all categorized in the following classes: the explanation of the hadith, citing evidence for his own hermeneutical interpretations: and criticizing others’ hadith-oriented argumentations. In Chapter Three the writer focuses on Mulla Sadra’s method in explaining the meanings of hadiths which includes such topics as dependence on the external meaning of the hadith, availability of adequate reasons for accepting the hadith (the truth of the contents, the reliability of the chain of documents, and the accordance of the hadith with intellect), and so forth. The topics covered are all illustrated with examples.
