Economic development is one of the most important concerns and obsessions of today’s world, particularly the Islamic world. The issue is of special significance from the Islamic viewpoint. The significance of economic development and its outstanding role in the establishment of an ideal society is among the established facts of the Quran and Sunnah. A study of the Islamic texts in this regard would demonstrate that Islam is ahead of all other schools of thought in paying attention to issues related to economic development.

The present study is an attempt to introduce Islamic viewpoints about development, particularly economic development in Islamic viewpoint. Also attempts have been made to show the universality of Islam and its superiority over other schools of thought (which are based are materialism) in the field of development. The present work tries to offer the foundations of a new economic system that is capable of solving the contemporary economic crises. Thus the idea of Islamic development is a new path for the spread and prosperity of Islam. The present work, which is indeed part of Mawsu`ah Mizan al-Hikmah, is a step towards the accomplishment of the said goal that explains the bases of Islamic thought about economic development through a new method on the basis of the Book and Sunnah.

The author has collected various hadiths related to the subject, avoiding any repetition of the hadiths. The selected hadiths are the oldest and the most comprehensive and firm ones from amongst the Sunni and Shi`ite sources along with their reference without referring to the chain of transmitters.

The contents of the book that have been organized in five parts and various chapters discuss the following issues: economic development (including such issues as the significance and advantages of economic progress, economic backwardness and its losses, the promised development in Islam, and the concept of poverty and its lauding), bases of development (including such concepts as knowledge, planning, work, market, consumption and government), principles of development (including such issues as ideological, legal, ethical, ritualistic, social, and hygienic principles), obstacles of development (including such issues as ethical, social and practical obstacles), and impedements of development (including such issues as showing off of ones’ wealth, pamperedness, detrimental issues, etc.).

Some explanations and recapitulations have been given at the end of each chapter and part that show the overall perspective of the hadiths of the book and the related chapter and in some cases show the difficulties existing in the hadiths. Also attempts have been made through acknowledgement of the contents of the hadiths of the chapter via rational and traditional indications to somehow acquire their authenticity.
