Imam al-Baqir (AS) Words Pt.6

There is no affliction worse than a lack of intellect.

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : ما عُبِدَ اللَّهُ بِشَي‏ءٍ أفضَلَ مِن عِفَّةِ بَطنٍ وفَرجٍ . الكافي : 2 / 79 / 1 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Allah can be worshipped with no act better than restraint of the stomach and the private parts.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 79, no. 5

  الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : النَّدامَةُ عَلَى العَفوِ أفضَلُ وأيسَرُ مِنَ النَّدامَةِ عَلَى العُقوبَةِ . الكافي : 2 / 108 / 6 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Regret for having pardoned someone is better and easier to bear than regret for having punished them.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 108, no. 6

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إنَّ للَّهِ‏ِ عزَّوجلَّ ضَنائنَ يَضُنُّ بِهِم عَنِ البَلاءِ ، فيُحييهِم في عافِيَةٍ ، ويَرزُقُهُم في عافِيَةٍ ، ويُميتُهُم في عافِيَةٍ ، ويَبعَثُهُم في عافِيَةٍ ، ويُسكِنُهُمُ الجَنَّةَ في عافِيَةٍ . الكافي : 2 / 462 / 1 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Verily Allah, Mighty and Exalted, has certain protégés whom He tenaciously guards against tribulation, such that He gives them life through vitality, sustains them with vitality, causes them to die in vitality, resurrects them again in vitality, and makes them dwell in Paradise in vitality.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 462, no. 1

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا مُصيبَةَ كَعَدَمِ العَقلِ . تحف العقول : 286 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘There is no affliction worse than a lack of intellect.’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 286

  الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لَمّا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ العَقلَ قالَ لَهُ : أقبِلْ فَأقبَلَ ، ثُمَّ قالَ لَهُ : أدبِرْ فَأدبَرَ ، فقالَ : وعِزَّتي وجَلالي ما خَلَقتُ خَلقاً أحسَنَ مِنكَ‏  ، إيّاكَ آمُرُ وإيّاكَ أنهى‏ ، وإيّاكَ اُثيبُ وإيّاكَ اُعاقِبُ . الكافي : 1 / 26 / 26 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘When Allah created the intellect He said to it, ‘Come forward’ so it came forward, then commanded it, ‘Go back’ and it went back. Then He said to it, ‘By my Honour and Exaltedness, I have not created anything better than you. It is you that I command, and you that I prohibit from things, and you that I punish and you that I reward.’ al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 26, no. 26

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : ما دَخَلَ قَلبَ امرِئٍ شَي‏ءٌ مِنَ الكِبرِ إلّا نَقَصَ مِن عَقلِهِ . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 186 / 16 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘No sooner does an iota of pride enter a man’s heart than he incurs a loss in his intellect.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 768, p. 186, no. 16

  الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إنَّ قَلباً لَيسَ فيهِ شَي‏ءٌ مِنَ العِلمِ كالبَيتِ الخَرابِ الَّذي لا عامِرَ لَهُ . الأمالي للطوسي : 543 / 1165 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, Verily a heart that does not have any knowledge is like a ruined house that has no inhabitants. Amali al-Tusi, p. 543, no. 1165

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : تَذاكُرُ العِلمِ ساعَةً خَيرٌ مِن قِيامِ لَيلَةٍ . الاختصاص : 245 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Revising knowledge for an hour is better than staying up the whole night in worship.’ al-Ikhtisas, p. 245

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن عَلَّمَ بابَ هُدىً فلَهُ مِثلُ أجرِ مَن عَمِلَ بِهِ ، ولا يُنقَصُ اُولئكَ مِن اُجورِهِم شَيئاً . تحف العقول : 297 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘He who teaches someone a matter of guidance receives the same reward as he who practices it, without any decrease in the latter’s reward thereof.’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 297

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : اِعلَمْ أ نَّهُ لا عِلمَ كطَلَبِ السَّلامَةِ ، ولا سَلامَةَ كسَلامَةِ القَلبِ . تحف العقول : 286 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Know that there is no knowledge like the quest for integrity, and there is no integrity better than the integrity of the heart [i.e. the soul].’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 286

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن عَمِلَ بِما يَعلَمُ عَلَّمَهُ اللَّهُ ما لا يَعلَمُ . أعلام الدين : 301 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘He who acts upon what he knows is taught by Allah that which he does not know.’ Alam al-Din, p. 301

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - لسَلَمَةَ بنِ كُهَيلٍ والحَكَمِ ابنِ عُتَيبَةَ - : شَرِّقا وغَرِّبا لَن تَجِدا عِلماً صَحيحاً إلّا شَيئاً يَخرُجُ مِن عِندِنا أهلَ البَيتِ . بحار الأنوار : 2 / 92 / 20 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said to Salama b. Kuhayl and al-Hakam b. Utayba, ‘Go to the east and go to the west but you will never find true knowledge except for what comes from us, the household of the Prophet.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 2, p. 92, no. 20

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إذا أتَت عَلَى العَبدِ أربَعونَ سَنَةً قيلَ لَهُ : خُذْ حِذرَكَ ؛ فإنَّكَ غَيرُ مَعذورٍ ، ولَيسَ ابنُ أربَعينَ سَنَةً أحَقَّ بِالعُذرِ مِنِ ابنِ عِشرينَ سَنَةً . الخصال : 545 / 24 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘When a man reaches forty years of age, it is said to him, ‘Be on your guard, for now you have no excuse’, and the forty-year old man is no longer as worthy of being excused as the twenty-year old man.’ al-Khisal, p. 545, no. 24

  الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مُروا شيعَتَنا بِزِيارَةِ قَبرِ الحُسَينِ بنِ عَلِيٍّ عليه السلام ؛ فإنَّ إتيانَهُ يَزيدُ فِي الرِّزقِ ، ويَمُدُّ فِي العُمرِ ، ويَدفَعُ مَدافِعَ السُّوءِ . بحار الأنوار : 101 / 4 / 12 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Command our Shia to visit the grave of al-Husayn b. Ali (AS), for verily going there increases sustenance, extends one’s life, and repels evil forces.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 101, p. 4, no. 12

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : ما مِن شَي‏ءٍ أحَبَّ إلَى اللَّهِ عزّوجلّ مِن عَمَلٍ يُداوَمُ عَلَيهِ ، وإن قَلَّ . الكافي : 2 / 82 / 3 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘There is nothing more beloved to Allah than the performance of an action that is maintained regularly, even if it be little.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 82, no. 3

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا يَنفَعُ مَعَ الشَّكِّ والجُحودِ عَمَلٌ . الكافي : 2 / 400 / 7 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘A good deed accompanied by doubt and denial is to no avail.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 400, no. 7

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : ثَلاثٌ لَم يَجعَلِ اللَّهُ عَزَّوجلَّ لِأحَدٍ فيهِنَّ رُخصَةً : ... الوَفاءُ بِالعَهدِ لِلبَرِّ والفاجِرِ . الكافي : 2 / 162 / 15 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘There are three things wherein Allah, Mighty and Exalted, has not granted anyone a concession … the fulfilment of one’s promise, be it to the good person or the bad.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 162, no. 15

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - في قَولِه تَعالى‏ : (وَكُلَّ إنْسانٍ ألْزَمْناهُ طائرَهُ في عُنُقِه) - : يَقولُ : خَيرُهُ وشَرُّهُ مَعَهُ حَيثُ كانَ ، لا يَستَطيعُ فِراقَهُ حَتّى‏ يُعطى‏ كِتابَهُ يَومَ القِيامَةِ بِما عَمِلَ . تفسير القمّي : 2 / 17 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS), with regards to Allah’s verse: “We have attached every person’s omen to his neck”, said, ‘The good and the evil he has done is with him wherever he is, and he cannot separate them until he is given his book about his deeds on the Day of Resurrection.’ Tafsir al-Qummi, v. 2, p. 17

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : يَجِبُ لِلمُؤمِنِ عَلَى المُؤمِنِ أن يَستُرَ عَلَيهِ سَبعينَ كَبيرَةً ! الكافي : 2 / 207 / 8 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘It is the duty of a believer towards a fellow believer to conceal seventy of his grave sins!’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 207, no. 8

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : ما مِن إنسانٍ يَطعَنُ في عَينِ مُؤمِنٍ إلّا ماتَ بِشَرِّ ميتَةٍ ، وكانَ قَمِناً أن لا يَرجِعَ إلى‏ خَيرٍ  . الكافي : 2 / 361 / 9 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Anybody who discredits a believer’s self-esteem will die an evil death, and he becomes deserving of never again returning to a good end.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 361, no. 9

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - في قولِهِ تعالى‏ : (يقولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مالاً لُبَداً)  - : هو عَمرُو بنُ عبدِ وَدٍّ حينَ عَرَضَ علَيهِ عليُّ بنُ أبيِ طالبٍ الإسلامَ يومَ الخَندَقِ وقالَ : فَأينَ ما أنفَقتُ فيكُم مالاً لُبَداً ؟! وكانَ أنفَقَ مالاً في‏الصَّدِّ عن سبيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَتَلَهُ عَلِيٌّ عليه السلام . تفسير القمّي : 2 / 422 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS), with regards to the verse: “He says, I have squandered immense wealth”, said, ‘This refers to Amr b. Abd Wudd when Ali b. Abu Talib proposed to him to submit to Allah [i.e. embrace Islam] on the day of al-Khandaq [the trench], to which he retorted, ‘And what about the immense wealth I have spent on you?!’ for he had spent great wealth in obstructing the cause of Allah, so Ali (AS) killed him.’ Tafsir al-Qummi, v. 2, p. 422  

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا قُوَّةَ كَرَدِّ الغَضَبِ . تحف العقول : 286 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘There is no strength like being able to repel one’s anger.’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 286

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن كَظَمَ غَيظاً وهو يَقدِرُ على‏ إمضائهِ حَشا اللَّهُ قَلبَهُ أمناً وإيماناً يومَ القِيامَةِ . الكافي : 2 / 110 / 7

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘He who suppresses his anger despite being able to vent it, Allah will fill his heart with peace and security on the Day of Resurrection.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 110, no. 7

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : أيّما مُؤمِنٍ حافَظَ علَى الصَّلواتِ المَفروضَةِ فَصَلّاها لِوَقتِها فَلَيسَ هذا مِن الغافِلينَ . الكافي : 3 / 270 / 14 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Verily any believer who is mindful of the obligatory prayers and prays them on time is not of the negligent ones.’ al-Kafi, v. 3, p. 270, no. 14

  الإمامُ الباقرُ (أ)و الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليهما السلام: مَن قَنِعَ بما رَزَقَهُ اللَّهُ فهُو مِن أغنَى الناسِ . الكافي : 2 / 139 / 9 .

 Imam al-Baqir or Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘He who is content with whatever sustenance Allah has provided him is the richest of people.’ al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 139, no. 9

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إنَّ أهلَ التَّقوى‏ هُمُ الأغنياءُ، أغناهُمُ القَليلُ مِن الدنيا فَمَؤونَتُهُم يَسِيرَةٌ . تحف العقول : 287 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Verily the Godwary people are the rich, and they have been enriched by their possession of very little of this world, therefore their provisions are very light.’ Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 287

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لو كنّا نُفتِي الناسَ بِرَأينا وهَوانا لَكُنّا مِن الهالِكِينَ ، ولَكُنّا نُفتِيهِم بآثارٍ مِن رسولِ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله واُصولِ عِلمٍ عِندَنا ، نَتَوارَثُها كابِراً عن كابِرٍ ... . بحار الأنوار : 2 / 172 / 3 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'If we were to give verdicts to people according to our opinions and whims, we would be among those who perish. And, we would be giving them verdicts based on mere reports handed down from the Prophet (SAWA) and the principles of knowledge that we have, which we have inherited from our forefathers...' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 2, p. 172, no. 3

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - لأبانَ بنِ تَغلِبَ - : اِجلِسْ في مَجلِسِ‏  المَدينةِ وأفتِ الناسَ ؛ فإنّي اُحِبُّ أن يُرى‏ في شِيعَتي مِثلُكَ . مستدرك الوسائل 17 / 315 / 21452

 Imam al-Baqir (AS), speaking to Aban b. Taghlib said, 'Sit in the mosque of Madina and give verdicts to the people, for I love to see the likes of you among my followers.' Mustadrak al-Wasa`il. v. 17, p. 315, no. 21452

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إنَّ اللَّهَ يُبغِضُ الفاحِشَ المُتَفَحِّشَ . الكافي : 2 / 324 / 4 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Allah hates the user of obscene language and the one who is shameless with it.' al-Kafi, v. 2, no. 324, no. 4

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : البِرُّ وصَدقَةُ السِّرِّ يَنفِيانِ الفَقرَ . بحار الأنوار : 74 / 81 / 83 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Righteousness and almsgiving in secret banishes poverty.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 74, p. 81, no. 83

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - لأبي النُّعمانِ - : لا تَستَأكِلْ بِنا الناسَ ، فلا يَزيدَكَ اللَّهُ بذلكَ إلّا فَقراً . بحار الأنوار : 78 / 184 / 11

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said to Abu Numan, 'Do not earn a living from people through us [i.e. in our name], for by that Allah will increase you in nothing but poverty.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 184, no. 11

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - وقد سَألَهُ رجُلٌ فأجابَهُ ، فقالَ الرجُلُ : إنّ الفُقَهاءَ لا يَقولونَ هذا ! - : يا وَيحَكَ ! وهَل رَأيتَ فَقيهاً قَطُّ ؟ ! إنَّ الفَقيهَ حَقَّ الفَقيهِ : الزاهِدُ في الدنيا ، الراغِبُ في الآخِرَةِ ، المُتَمسِّكُ بسُنَّةِ النبيِّ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله . الكافي : 1 / 70 / 8 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) was once asked a question by a man, to which he duly replied, and to which the man then retorted, 'The jurists do not say this!' The Imam said, 'Woe unto you! Have you ever seen a jurist?! A real jurist is a person who is ascetic from this world, who craves for the Hereafter, and strongly holds onto the tradition of the Prophet (SAWA).' al-Kafi, v. 1, p. 70, no. 8

  الإمامُ زينُ العابدينَ أو الإمامُ الباقرُ عليهما السلام : مُتَفَقِّهٌ في الدِّينِ أشَدُّ على الشيطانِ مِن عِبادَةِ ألفِ عابِدٍ . بحار الأنوار : 1 / 213 / 10 .

 Imam Zayn al-Abidin (AS) or Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'A person educated in religion is more difficult for Satan to bear than the worship of one thousand worshippers.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 1, p. 213, no. 10

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن أتَمَّ رُكوعَهُ لم تَدخُلْهُ وَحشَةٌ في قَبرِهِ . ثواب الأعمال : 55 / 1 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Whoever's bowings in his prayer [ruku] are perfect will not experience fright in their grave.' Thawab al-Amal, p. 55 no. 1

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن قَتَلَ مُؤمناً مُتَعمِّداً أثبَتَ اللَّهُ تعالى‏ علَيهِ جَميعَ الذُّنوبِ ، وبَرِئَ المَقتولُ مِنها ، وذلكَ قولُ اللَّهِ تعالى‏ : (أُرِيدُ أن تَبُوأَ بِإثْمِي وإثْمِكَ فتَكونَ مِن أصْحابِ النّارِ)  .   ثواب الأعمال : 328 / 9 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Whoever intentionally kills a believer, Allah will affirm for him all the sins, and will acquit sins from the one he has killed. This is according to Allah's verse in the Qur'an: "I desire that you earn [the burden of] my sin and your sin, to become one of the inmates of the Fire."  Thawab al-A'mal, p. 328, no. 9

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : إنّ المؤمنَ يُبتَلى‏ بكُلِّ بَليَّةٍ ويَموتُ بكُلِّ مِيتَةٍ إلّا أنّهُ لا يَقتُلُ نفسَهُ . الكافي : 3 / 112 / 8 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'A believer may be afflicted with all kinds of misfortunes, and may die in all sorts of ways, but he must not kill himself.' al-Kafi, v. 3, p. 112, no. 8

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : كانَ فيما ناجى‏ بهِ اللَّهُ موسى‏ عليه السلام على‏ الطُّورِ أن : يا موسى‏ ، أبلِغْ قَومَكَ أ نّهُ ما يَتَقَرَّبُ إلَيَّ المُتَقرِّبونَ بمِثلِ البُكاءِ مِن خَشيَتي ، وما تَعَبَّدَ لي المُتَعبِّدونَ بمِثلِ الوَرَعِ مِن مَحارِمي ، ولا تَزَيَّنَ لي المُتَزيِّنونَ بمِثلِ الزُّهدِ في الدنيا عمّا بِهِمُ الغِنى‏ عَنهُ . فقالَ موسى‏ عليه السلام : يا أكرَمَ الأكرَمينَ ، فماذا أثَبتَهُم على‏ ذلكَ ؟ فقالَ : يا موسى‏ ، أمّا المُتَقرِّبُونَ إليَّ بالبُكاءِ مِن خَشيَتي فَهُم في الرَّفيقِ الأعلى‏ لا يَشرَكُهُم فيهِ أحَدٌ . ثواب الأعمال : 205 / 1 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'One of the things that Allah confided to Moses (AS) on the mountain is: 'O Moses, inform your people that those who are close to Me can only come nearer to Me by crying to Me out of awe of Me, and the best worship performed by My worshippers is restraint against committing what I have forbidden. Those who adorn themselves for Me have no better adornment than abstinence from worldly affairs in that which they can manage without.' Moses (AS) asked, 'O most Generous of the generous, so what establishes them upon it?' He said, 'O Moses, as for those who come near to Me with crying from My awe, they are in the loftiest level which they will share with no one.' Thawab al-Amal, p. 205, no. 1

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - في خِلقَةِ الإنسانِ في الرَّحِمِ - : إذا كَمُلَ أربَعةُ أشهُرٍ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ مَلَكَينِ خَلّاقَينِ، . . . فيَقولانِ : يا ربِّ ، شَقِيّاً أو سَعيداً ؟ فيُؤمَرانِ ، فيقولانِ : يا رَبِّ ، ما أجَلُهُ وما رِزقُهُ وكلُّ شي‏ءٍ مِن حالِهِ - وعَدَّدَ مِن ذلك أشياءَ - ؟ ويَكتُبانِ المِيثاقَ بينَ عَينَيهِ . الكافي : 6 / 13 / 3 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS), with regards to the creation of the human in the womb said, 'When four months are completed, Allah sends two creative angels...., and they ask, 'O Lord, shall it be wretched or prosperous?' Again, they are commanded, and they then ask, 'O Lord, what is its due date of death, its sustenance, and all other matters relating to its state - [and he listed some of them]-?' And they then go about writing a covenant between his eyes.' al-Kafi, v. 6, p. 13, no. 3

الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا عِلمَ كَطَلَبِ السَّلامَةِ ، ولا سَلامَةَ كسَلامَةِ القَلبِ . بحارالأنوار: 78 / 164 / 1 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'There is no knowledge like the acquirement of wellbeing [for oneself], and there is no wellbeing like the soundness of the heart.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 164, no. 1

 الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام: إنَّ للَّهِ عُقوباتٍ في القُلوبِ والأبدانِ : ضَنْكٌ في المَعيشَةِ ووَهنٌ في العِبادَةِ، وما ضُرِبَ عَبدٌ بِعُقوبَةٍ أعظَمَ مِن قَسوَةِ القَلبِ . تحف العقول : 296 .

 Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Allah has punishments of the hearts and of the bodies: a difficult livelihood, weakness in worship, and the harshest punishment a servant is stricken with is hardness of the heart.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 296
