The Prophet's Hadiths on the Holy Quran

When one of you would like to converse with his Lord, he should read the Quran.

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : ثلاثةٌ يُذهِبنَ النِّسيانَ ويُحْدِثْنَ الذِّكْرَ : قِراءةُ القُرآنِ ، والسِّواكُ ، والصِّيامُ . بحار الأنوار : 62 / 266 / 39 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Three things eliminate forgetfulness and incite remembrance: recitation of the Qur'an, brushing the teeth, and fasting.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 62, p. 266, no. 39

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : عَليكَ بتِلاوَةِ القرآنِ وذِكرِ اللَّهِ كثيراً ، فإنّهُ ذِكرٌ لكَ في السماءِ ونورٌ لكَ في الأرضِ . الخصال : 525 / 13 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'I urge you to recite the Qur'an and remember Allah frequently, for verily it [will result in] a remembrance for you in the heavens and a light for you in the earth.' al-Khisal, p. 525, no. 13

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : طَيِّبُوا أفواهَكُم بِالسِّواكِ؛ فإنّها طُرُقُ القُرآنِ . كنز العمّال : 2753 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Freshen your mouths by brushing, for verily they are the means to the Qur'an.' Kanz al-Umal. 2753

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : الشُّفَعاءُ خَمسَةٌ : القُرآنُ ، والرَّحِمُ ، والأمانَةُ ، ونَبِيُّكُم ، وأهلُ بَيتِ نَبِيِّكُم . بحار الأنوار : 8 / 43 / 39 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'There are five intercessors: the Qur'an, consanguinity, a trust, your Prophet, and your Prophet's household.' Bihar al-Anwar, p. 43, no. 39

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله - في وصيِّتِهِ لأبي ذَ رٍّ - : يا أبا ذَ رٍّ ، اخفِضْ صَوتَكَ عِند الجَنائزِ، وعِندَ القِتالِ ، وعِندَ القرآنِ. بحار الأنوار : 77 / 82 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said in his advice to Abu Dharr, ‘O Abu Dharr, lower your voice at funerals, during a battle, and when the Qur’an is being recited.’ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77, p. 82

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنَّ مِن تَعظيمِ جَلالِ اللَّهِ عزَّوجلَّ كَرامَةَ ذي الشَّيبَةِ ، وحامِلِ القُرآنِ ، والإمامِ العادِلِ . كنز العمّال : 25507 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily venerating Allah’s Exaltedness involves honouring the old, the bearer of the Qur’an and the just Imam.’ Kanz al-Ummal, no. 25507

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله :  مَن اُعطِيَ القرآنَ فَظَنَّ أنّ أحَداً اُعطِيَ أكثَرَ ممّا اُعطيَ فقد عَظَّمَ صَغيراً وصَغَّرَ كبيراً . معاني الأخبار : 279 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever is given the Quran, and then doubts that someone has been given something more than him, this person has aggrandized something little and belittled something great.'Maani al-Akhbar, p. 279

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : القرآنُ غِنىً ، لا غِنىً دونَهُ ، ولا فَقرَ بعدَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 19 / 18 .

 5163. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The Quran is rich, and there is no richness without it, and no poverty after it.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 19, no. 18

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : علَيكُم بتَعَلُّمِ القرآنِ وكَثرَةِ تِلاوَتِهِ . كنزالعمّال : 2368 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'You must learn the Quran, and recite it a lot.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2368

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ الذي ليسَ في جَوفِهِ شي‏ءٌ من القرآنِ كالبَيتِ الخَرِبِ . كنز العمّال : 2478 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Someone who has none of the Quran in their self is like a wrecked house.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2478

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : حَمَلةُ القرآنِ هُمُ المَحفوفُونَ برَحمَةِ اللَّهِ ، المَلبوسونَ بنُورِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ . جامع الأخبار : 115 / 202 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The bearers of the Quran [i.e. those who memorize it] are surrounded by the mercy of Allah and are dressed with the light of Allah.' Jami al-Akhbar, p. 115 no. 202

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ أحَقَّ الناسِ بالتَّخَشُّعِ في السِّرِّ والعَلانيَةِ لَحامِلُ القرآنِ ، وإنَّ أحَقَّ الناسِ في‏السِّرِّ والعَلانيَةِ بالصلاةِ والصومِ لَحامِلُ القرآنِ . الكافي : 2 / 604 / 5 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The worthiest of people in their humbleness, both secretly and openly, are the bearers of the Quran, and the worthiest of people in terms of their prayers and fasting, both secretly and openly, are the bearers of the Quran.' al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 604, no. 5

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لا يَنبغي لِصاحِبِ القرآنِ أن يَحِدَّ مَع مَن حَدَّ ، ولا يَجهَلَ مَع مَن يَجهَلُ وفي جَوفِهِ كلامُ اللَّهِ . كنز العمّال : 2347 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The owner of the Quran [i.e. he who has memorized it] should not be harsh towards those who are harsh with him, nor behave ignorantly like those who are ignorant, while he has the words of Allah inside him.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2347

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إذا أحَبَّ أحدُكُم أن يُحَدِّثَ رَبَّهُ فَلْيَقرَأْ القرآنَ . كنز العمّال : 2257 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'When one of you would like to converse with his Lord, he should read the Quran.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2257

 رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : يا بُنَيَّ ، لا تَغفُلْ عَن قِراءةِ القرآنِ ؛ فإنَّ القرآنَ يُحيِي القَلبَ ، ويَنهى‏ عنِ الفحشاءِ والمُنكَرِ والبَغيِ . كنز العمّال : 4032 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'O son, do not neglect reading the Quran, for verily the Quran revives the heart, and prevents the committing of the erroneous, wrong and corrupt.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 4032

 رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : يقالُ لِصاحِبِ القرآنِ : اِقرَأ وَارقَ ورَتِّلْ كما كنتَ تُرَتِّلُ في دارِ الدنيا ، فإنّ مَنزِلَتَكَ عندَ آخِرِ آيَةٍ كُنتَ تَقرَؤها . كنزالعمّال : 2330 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'It will be said to the reciter of the Quran, 'Read and rise in rank, and recite as you recited in the world, for your station is as per the last verse that you recited.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2330

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : اقرَؤوا القرآنَ بالحُزنِ ؛ فإنّهُ نَزَلَ بالحُزنِ . كنز العمّال : 2777 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Read the Quran sorrowfully, for verily it came down sorrowfully.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2777

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لِكلِّ شي‏ءٍ حِليَةٌ وحِليَةُ القرآنِ الصَّوتُ الحَسَنُ . كنز العمّال : 2768 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'For everything there is an ornament, and the ornament of the Quran is a nice voice.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2768

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : زَيِّنُوا القرآنَ بأصواتِكُم . بحارالأنوار : 92 / 190 / 2 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Decorate the Quran with your voices.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 190, no. 2

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أنتَ تَقرَأُ القرآنَ ما نَهاكَ ، فإذا لم يَنهَكَ فَلَستَ تَقرَؤهُ . شرح نهج البلاغة : 10 / 23 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'You read the Quran and it prevents you [from sins]. And if it does not prevent you, then you are not reading it [correctly].' Sharh Nahj al-Balagha li Ibn Abi al-Hadid, v. 10 p. 23

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : رُبَّ تالِ القرآنِ والقرآنُ يَلعَنُهُ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 184 / 19 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Many a reciter of the Quran is cursed by the Quran itself.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 184, p. 19

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : جَلاءُ هذهِ القُلوبِ ذِكرُ اللَّهِ وتِلاوَةُ القرآنِ . تنبيه الخواطر : 2 / 122 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The polish of these hearts is the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Quran.' Tanbih al-Khawatir, v. 2, p. 122

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ هذهِ القُلوبَ تَصدَأُ كما يَصدأُ الحَديدُ إذا أصابَهُ الماءُ . قيلَ : وما جَلاؤها ؟ قالَ : كَثرَةُ ذِكرِ المَوتِ، وتِلاوَةِ القرآنِ . كنز العمّال : 42130 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Verily these hearts rust like metal rusts when exposed to water.' He was asked, 'And what can polish them?' He said, 'Remembering death much, and reciting the Quran.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 42130

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ مِن عِظَمِ جَلالِ اللَّهِ تعالى‏ إكرامُ ثلاثةٍ : ذِي الشَّيبَةِ في الإسلامِ ، والإمامِ العادِلِ، وحامِلِ القرآنِ غيرِ الغالي ولا الجافي عَنهُ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 184 / 21 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Honouring three people is glorifying the Magnitude of Allah: a Muslim of old age, a just leader, and one who has memorised the Quran, who is neither an extremist with regard to it, nor has he shunned it [practicing it] aside.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 184, no. 21

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أدِّبوا أولادَكُم على‏ ثَلاثِ خِصالٍ : حُبِّ نَبيِّكُم ، وحُبِّ أهلِ بَيتِهِ ، وقِراءةِ القرآنِ . كنز العمّال : 45409 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Discipline your children with three features: the love of your Prophet (SAWA), the love of his Household, and the recitation of the Quran.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 45409

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : َضلُ القرآنِ على‏ سائرِ الكلامِ كَفَضلِ اللَّهِ على‏ خَلقِهِ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 19 / 18 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The superiority of the Quran over any other speech is as the superiority of Allah over His creation.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 19, no. 18

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : خِيارُكُم مَن تَعَلَّمَ القرآنَ وعَلَّمَهُ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 186 / 2 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The best of you are those who learn the Quran, and teach it.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 186, no. 2

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : علَيكَ بقِراءةِ القرآنِ ؛ فإنّ قِراءتَهُ كَفّارةٌ للذُّنوبِ ، وسَترٌ في النارِ ، وأمانٌ مِن العذابِ . بحارالأنوار : 92 / 17 / 18 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'You must read the Quran, for verily reading it is a penance for the sins, protection from the Fire, and a safeguard from punishment.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 17, no. 18

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : نَظِّفُوا طَريقَ القرآنِ ، قيلَ : يا رسولَ اللَّهِ ، وما طَريقُ القرآنِ ؟ قالَ : أفواهُكُم ، قيلَ : بماذا ؟ قالَ : بالسِّواكِ . بحار الأنوار : 92 / 213 / 11 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Clean the path of the Quran.' He was asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, and what is the path of the Quran?' He replied, 'Your mouths.' They asked, 'How [should we clean them]?' He said, '[By brushing them] With a tooth cleanser (siwak).' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 92, p. 213, no. 11

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله - في قولِهِ تعالى‏ : (وَرَتِّلِ القُرآنَ تَرتيلاً) - : بَيِّنْهُ تِبياناً ، ولا تَنثُرْهُ نَثرَ البَقْلِ ، ولا تَهُذَّهُ هَذَّ الشِّعرِ ، قِفُوا عندَ عَجائبِهِ ، حَرِّكُوا بهِ القُلوبَ ، ولا يَكُن هَمُّ أحَدِكُم آخِرَ السُّورَةِ . النوادر للراوندي : 164 / 247 .

 The Prophet (SAWA), with regard to Allah's verse in the Qur'an: "and recite the Quran in a measured tone" said, 'Recite it clearly, do not disperse it prosaically, nor rave it like raving poetry. Stop where it mentions wonders, and move the hearts with it, and do not let your only concern be [to finish] the end of the chapter.' Nawadir al-Rawandi, p. 30

 رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أكثَرُ ما أخافُ على‏ اُمَّتِي مِن بَعدي رجُلٌ يَتَأوَّلُ القرآنَ يَضَعُهُ على‏ غيرِ مَواضِعِهِ . منية المريد : 369 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The worst thing I fear for my community after me is for someone to interpret the Quran wrongfully.' Munyat al- Murid, p. 369

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : بِئسَما لأِحدِكُم أن يَقولَ نَسِيتُ آيَةً كَيتَ وكَيتَ ، بَل هو نُسِّيَ . استَذكِرُوا القرآنَ ، فوالذي نَفسي بيَدِهِ لَهُو أشَدُّ تَفَصِّياً مِن صُدورِ الرِّجالِ مِن النَّعَمِ مِن عُقُلِها . كنز العمّال : 2849 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'How wretched is the one who says that he has forgotten such and such verse - rather it is that he has been forgotten. Remember the Quran, for by He who owns my soul, it is stronger at detaching itself from the hearts of men than the detachment of an animal from its shackle.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2850

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : علَيكَ بتِلاوَةِ القرآنِ ؛ فإنّهُ نُورٌ لَكَ في الأرضِ ، وذُخرٌ لكَ في السّماءِ . الترغيب والترهيب : 2 / 349 / 10 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Do recite the Quran, for it is a light for you on the earth and a provision for you in Heaven.' Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib. v. 2, p. 348, no. 10

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن عَلَّمَ رجُلاً القرآنَ فهُو مَولاهُ ، لا يَخذُلُهُ ولا يَستَأثِرُ علَيهِ . كنزالعمّال : 2382 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever teaches a person the Quran, he becomes his master. He should not disappoint him or favor anything over him.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2382

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أشرافُ اُمّتي حَمَلَةُ القرآنِ وأصحابُ الليلِ . الخصال : 7 / 21 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The noblemen of my community are the bearers of the Quran [i.e. those who memorize it] and the people of night vigil.' al-Khisal, p. 7, no. 21

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ هذهِ القُلوبَ تَصدَأُ كما يَصدَأُ الحَديدُ . قيلَ : يا رسولَ اللَّهِ ، فما جَلاؤها ؟ قالَ : تِلاوَةُ القرآنِ . كنز العمّال : 2441 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'These hearts rust the way metal rusts.' He was asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, and what can clean them?' He replied, 'The recitation of the Quran.' Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2441

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : ما مِن رَجُلٍ عَلَّمَ وَلَدَهُ القُرآنَ إلّا تُوِّجَ أبَواهُ يَومَ القِيامَةِ بِتاجِ المُلكِ، وكُسِيَ حُلَّتَينِ لَم يَرَ النّاسُ مِثلَهُما. . تاريخ دمشق: ج 18 ص 99 عن معاذ بن جبل، كنز العمّال: ج 1 ص 540 ح 2421.

          The Prophet (SAWA) said, “There is no man who teaches his child the Qurān without that child’s parents being crowned on Judgment Day with a crown of sovereignty and they will be clothed with two sets of clothing no people have seen the likes of.” Tārikh Dimashq, vol. 18, p. 99, narrating from Ma‘ādh ibn Jabal. Kanz al-‘Ummāl, vol. 1, p. 540, h. 2421.

 رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن قَرَأَ القُرآنَ قَبلَ أن يَحتَلِمَ فَقَد اُوتِي الحُكمَ صَبِيّا. شعب الإيمان: ج 2 ص 330 ح 1949، الدرّ المنثور: ج 5 ص 485 كلاهما عن ابن عبّاس.

          The Prophet (SAWA) said: “He who recites the Qurān before puberty has indeed been given wisdom in his childhood.” Shu‘ab al-Imān, vol. 2, p. 330, h. 1949. al-Durr al-Manthur, vol. 5, p. 485. Both narrating from Ibn ‘Abbās.

رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن قَبَّلَ وَلَدَهُ كَتَبَ اللهُ‏ُ عزّ وجلّ لَهُ حَسَنَةً، ومَن فَرَّحَهُ فَرَّحَهُ اللهُ‏ُ يَومَ القِيامَةِ، ومَن عَلَّمَهُ القُرآنَ دُعِيَ بِالأبَوَينِ فَيُكسَيانِ حُلَّتَينِ يُضيءُ مِن نورِهِما وُجوهُ أهلِ الجَنَّةِ. الكافي: ج 6 ص 49 ح 1 عن الفضل بن أبي قرّة عن الإمام الصادق علیه السلام ، عدّة الداعي: ص 79.

          The Prophet (SAWA) said: “Allah will write a reward for he who kisses his child, and Allah will bring happiness on Judgement Day to he who makes his child happy, and he who teaches him the Qurān, his parents will be called upon [in the Hereafter] and they will be clothed with two garments of light which will brighten the faces of the people of Heaven.” al-Kāfi, vol. 6, p. 49 h. 1, narrating from al-Fadl ibn Abu Qurrah from Imām al-Sādiq (a.s.). ‘Uddah al-Dā‘i, p. 79.

رسول الله‏ صلی الله علیه وآله : أدِّبوا أولادَكُم عَلى ثَلاثِ خِصالٍ: حُبِّ نَبِيِّكُم، وحُبِّ أهلِ بَيتِهِ، وعَلى قِراءَةِ القُرآنِ. الصواعق المحرقة: ص 172، ينابيع المودّة: ج 2 ص 457 ح 268، كنز العمّال: ج 16 ص 456 ح 45409.

          The Prophet (SAWA) said: “Raise your children to have three features: love for your Prophet, love for his Household, and reciting the Qurān.” al-Sawā‘q al-Muhriqah, p. 172. Yanābi‘ al-Mawaddah, vol. 2 p. 457, h. 268. Kanz al-‘Ummāl, vol. 16, p. 456, h. 45409.

رسول الله‏ صلی الله علیه وآله : مَن أرادَ عِلمَ الأوَّلينَ والآخِرينَ فَلْيُثَوِّرِ القرآنَ‏ . كنز العمّال : 2454 .

 The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Whoever wants the knowledge of the first and the last should explore the Quran.'  Kanz al-Ummal, no. 2454
