Imam Ali's Words on the Holy Quran

Learn the Quran for it is the best of speeches, and study it for it is the spring of the hearts.

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : يا أيُّها النّاسُ إنَّهُ لَم يَكُنْ للَّهِ‏سُبحانَهُ حُجّةٌ في أرضهِ أوْكَدُ مِن نَبيِّنا محمّدٍ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله ، ولا حِكْمَةٌ أبْلَغُ مِن كِتابِهِ القُرآنِ العَظيمِ . غرر الحكم : 11004 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'O people! Allah, glory be to Him, has no surer argument on His earth than our Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), and there is no wisdom more conclusive than His Book, the Grand Quran.' Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 11004

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : قَواعِدُ الإسلامِ سَبعٌ : فَاُولَها العَقلُ وعلَيهِ بُنِيَ الصَّبرُ ، والثانيّة : صَونُ العِرضِ وصِدقُ اللَّهجَةِ ، والثالِثَةُ : تِلاوَةُ القُرآنِ على‏ جِهَتِهِ ، والرابِعَةُ : الحُبُّ في اللَّهِ والبُغضُ في اللَّهِ ، والخامِسةُ : حَقُّ آلِ محمّدٍ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله ومَعرِفَةُ وَلايَتِهِم ، والسادِسَةُ : حَقُّ الإخوانِ والمُحاماةُ علَيهِم ، والسّابِعَةُ : مُجاوَرَةُ الناسِ بالحُسنى‏ . تحف العقول : 196 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Islam has seven fundamentals: the first is reason, on which perseverance is founded. The second is maintenance of one's honour and honest speech. The third is proper recitation of the Qur'an. The fourth is to love for the sake of Allah and to hate for the sake of Allah. The fifth is the right due to the household of the Prophet (SAWA) and their guardianship. The sixth is the right of one's fellow brothers and their protection. The seventh is close contact with people through fair means.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 196

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : العُبوديَّةُ خَمسَةُ أشياءَ : خَلاءُ البَطنِ، وَقِراءةُ القرآنِ، وقِيامُ اللَّيلِ، والتَّضَرُّعُ عِندَ الصُّبحِ، والبُكاءُ مِن خَشيَةِ اللَّهِ . جامع الأخبار : 505 / 1397 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Adoration [of Allah] consists of five things: keeping the stomach empty, reading the Qur’an, performing the night prayer, imploring Allah at dawn, and crying much from fear of Allah.’ Jami al-Akhbar, p. 505, no. 1397

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : تَعَلَّموا القرآنَ ؛ فإنّهُ أحسَنُ الحَديثِ ، وتَفَقَّهُوا فيهِ فإنَّهُ رَبيعُ القُلوبِ . نهج البلاغة : الخطبة 110 .

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : اللَّهَ اللَّهَ في القرآنِ ، لا يَسبِقُكُم بالعَمَلِ بهِ غَيرُكُم . نهج البلاغة : الكتاب 47 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Allah Allah [i.e. I advise you] with the Quran, nobody other than you should be quicker in acting according to it.' Nahj al-Balagha, Letter 4

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : اللّهوُ يُسخِطُ الرَّحمنَ ، ويُرضي الشَّيطانَ ، ويُنسي القُرآنَ . بحار الأنوار: 78 / 9 / 66 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Amusement brings discontent to the Merciful, pleases Satan, and it makes one forget the Quran.' Bihar al-Anwar, v. 78, p. 9, no. 66

الإمام عليّ عليه السلام: مُجالَسَةُ أهلِ اللّهوِ يُنسِي القُرآنَ ويُحضِرُ الشَّيطانَ . تحف العقول : 151 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Frequenting with the debauched brings about the forgetting of the Quran and brings the presence of the devil.' Tuhaf al-Uqul, no. 151

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : حَقُّ الوَلَدِ علَى الوالِدِ أن يُحَسِّنَ اسمَهُ ، ويُحسِّنَ أدَبَهُ ، ويُعَلِّمَهُ القرآنَ . نهج البلاغة : الحكمة 399 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The right of a child incumbent upon his father is that he should give him a good name, good manners, and teach him the Quran.' Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 399

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : كأنّي بالعجمِ فَساطِيطُهُم في مسجدِ الكوفةِ، يُعلِّمونَ النّاسَ القرآنَ كما اُنزِلَ . الغيبة للنعماني : 318 / 5 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'I can almost see the non-Arabs pitching their tents in the mosque of Kufa, teaching the Qur'an to the people as it was originally revealed.' al-Ghayba li al-Numani, p. 318, no. 5

الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : ألا اُخبِرُكُم بالفَقيهِ حَقِّ الفَقيهِ ؟ مَن لم يُرَخِّصِ الناسَ في مَعاصِي اللَّهِ ، ولم يُقَنِّطْهُم مِن رَحمَةِ اللَّهِ ، ولم يُؤمِنْهُم مِن مَكرِ اللَّهِ ، ولم يَدَعِ القرآنَ رَغبَةً عَنهُ إلى‏ ما سِواهُ . تحف العقول : 204 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Shall I inform you of a true learned person? He who does not allow people to commit acts of disobedience to Allah, does not let them lose hope in the mercy of Allah, does not assure them against the devices of Allah, and does not leave the Quran in his desire for something other than it.' الإمام عليّ علیه السلام  ـ في صِفَةِ القُرآنِ ـ: ألا إنَّ فيهِ عِلمَ ما يَأتي، وَالحَديثَ عَنِ الماضي، ودَواءَ دائِكُم، ونَظمَ ما بَينَكُم. . نهج البلاغة: الخطبة 158، الرواشح السماويّة: ص22، بحار الأنوار: ج92 ص23 ح24.

          Imām Ali (a.s.) –describing the Qur'ān: “Know that it contains knowledge of what is going to occur, stories of the past, a cure for your illnesses and rules to organize your affairs.” Nahj al-Balāghah, Sermon 158, al-Rawāshih al-Samāwiya, p. 22, Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 92, p. 23, h. 24.

الإمام عليّ علیه السلام : إذا عَقَلَ الغُلامُ و قَرَأ شَيئاً مِنَ القُرآنِ عُلِّمَ الصَّلاةَ. دعائم الإسلام: ج 1 ص 193، بحار الأنوار: ج 8 ص 133.

          Imām ‘Ali (a.s.) said: “When a child becomes intellectually mature and is able to recite parts of the Qurān, he should be taught how to pray.” Da‘ā'im al-Islām, vol. 1, p. 193. Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 8, p. 133.

الإمام عليّ علیه السلام : حَقُّ الوَلَدِ عَلَى الوالِدِ أن يُحسِنَ اسمَهُ، و يُحسِنَ أدَبَهُ، و يُعَلِّمَهُ القُرآنَ. نهج البلاغة: الحكمة 399، شرح نهج البلاغة لابن أبي الحديد: ج 19 ص 365.

          Imām ‘Ali (a.s.) said: “The children’s right upon the father is that he should choose a good name for them, discipline them well and teach them the Qurān.” Nahj al-Balāghah, Wise Saying 399. Sharh Nahj al-Balāghah, vol. 19, p. 365.

الإمام عليّ علیه السلام ـ لَـمّا سُئِلَ فَقيلَ: إنَّ فِي القُرآنِ كُلَّ عِلمٍ إلَّا الطِّبَّ؟ ـ : أما إنَّ فِي القُرآنِ لَآیَةً تَجمَعُ الطِّبَّ كُلَّهُ: (وَكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ وَلاَ تُسْرِفُواْ)  . الدعوات: ص 75 ح 174، بحار الأنوار: ج 62 ص 267 ح 42.

          Imām ‘Ali (a.s.) said, when he was asked about the Quran that how it has all sciences except medicine : “Be aware! There is a verse in the Qurān which contains the whole science of medicine. It says: ‘…and eat and drink but be not prodigal .”  al-Da‘awāt, p. 75, h. 174. Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 62, p. 267, h. 42.

الإمام عليّ علیه السلام: إنَّ اللَّهَ سبحانَهُ لَم يَعِظْ أحَداً بمِثلِ هذا القرآنِ . نهج البلاغة : الخطبة 176 .

 Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Allah Almighty has not exhorted anyone like He does through the Qur'an.' Nahj al-Balagha, Sermon 176
