42. The Prophet (SA) said:
“O Allah, I say as my brother Moses said:
“O Allah, appoint for me an agent from my family,
my brother Ali;
enhance my strength by him
and let him share my task,
so that we may exalt You abundantly
and remember You abundantly;
for indeed You are seer of us.”

“Whoever has Allah and His Messenger as his friend, this [Ali] is his friend.
O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him
and show enmity towards whoever shows enmity towards him.
O Allah, love whoever loves him
and hate whoever hates him.”

46. Imam Ali (AS) said:
“I was in pain,
so I went to the Prophet (SA);
he put me in his place and stood up to pray.
He threw on me the end of his shirt
and said: “O Ibn Abi Talib, you have been cured;
do not worry.
I have never asked Allah for something without asking Him for the same thing for you,
and I have never asked Allah for something
but that He gives it to me, except that I was told:
“There is no prophet after you.”

47. Al-Irshad:
“The Commander of the Faithful (AS) never left the Prophet (SA), but for a necessity;
when he went for something,
the Prophet (SA) woke up and missed Ali (AS).
He said while his wives were around him: “Call my brother and companion for me.”
Then debility seized him (again) and he kept silent.
Aishah said: “Call Abu Bakr for him.”
He was called,
and he came in and sat near his head.
When the Prophet (SA) opened his eyes,
he looked at him and turned away from him.
Abu Bakr stood up, and said:
“If he had needed anything from me, he would have told me.”
When he left, the Messenger of Allah (SA) repeated what he had said:
“Call my brother and companion for me.”
Hafsah said:
“Call Umar for him.”
He was called,
and when he came, the Prophet (SA) saw him and turned away from him,
so he left.
Then he (SA) again said:
“Call my brother and companion for me.”
Um Salamah then said:
“Call Ali for him.
He desires no one else”.
The Commander of the Faithful was called;
when he came near the Prophet (SA), he beckoned to him
and kept him close.
The Prophet (SA) went in a private talk with him for a long time.
Then Ali stood up and sat aside,
and the Messenger of Allah (SA) went into a slumber.
The people asked him:
“What did he confide to you, O Abu al-Hasan?”
He said: “He taught me a thousand doors of knowledge,
and each door opened for me another thousand doors.
He also assigned to me to do what I will undertake, if Allah wills it.”
The Messenger of Allah (SA) became weaker,
and death drew near;
the Commander of the Faithful was next to him.
When he (SA) was about to pass on, he said to Ali:
“Put my head in your lap,
for the will of Allah, the Exalted, has come to pass.
When my soul leaves my body,
take it in your hand and pass it over your face,
then face me towards the Qiblah,
and manage my affairs.
Pray over me before anybody else,
and do not leave me until you have buried me in my grave.
Seek assistance from Allah, the Almighty.”
Ali took his head,
and placed it in his lap.
Then he lost consciousness.
Fatimah (AS) came to him, looking into his face,
lamenting, weeping, and reciting:
‘A bright face, through which rains are sent down,
A refuge for the widows, a haven for the orphans.’
The Messenger of Allah (SA) opened his eyes,
and said in a faint voice:
“O my daughter, these are the words of your uncle Abu Talib.”
Do not say so, or rather recite:
“Muhammad is but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. If he dies or is slain, will you turn back on your heels?” Qur’an, 3:144.
She kept weeping for a long time.
He indicated to her to come close to him,
and she came close.
He whispered something to her, which made her face radiant;
then he passed away, with the right hand of the Commander of the Faithful under his chin
and his soul (SA) poured forth into it.
Ali raised his hand to his face and rubbed it with it.
He then put the Prophet (SA) in the direction of the Qiblah,
closed his eyes
and laid him out on his waist-cloth.
Then he went on to give him the burial.”
