“I visited the Messenger of Allah (SA) while he was sleeping and receiving revelation...

I stayed for a while when the Prophet (SA) woke up, saying:

“Your guardian is only Allah, His Messenger, and the faithful who maintain the prayer and give the zakat while bowing down.”  Qur’an, 5:55.

Praise be to Allah who completed His blessings to Ali,

when a beggar came and asked.

I was bowing,

so I gave him my ring out of my finger,

when Allah revealed the following concering me:

“This means they have a better claim to you and they are more worthy of you, your affairs, your selves and your wealth.

These are Allah, His Messenger and the faithful,

when I saw some rudeness from him;

when I returned to the Messenger of Allah (SA),

I mentioned Ali and spoke ill of him.

I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah (SA) changing,

and he said: “O Burayda, am I not closer to the faithful than their own souls?” [Editor’s note: Alluding to the verse 33:6 which reads: The Prophet is closer to the faithful than their own souls.]

“Tell me about the Wilayah of Ali.

Is it from Allah

or is it from His Messenger?”

He (AS) got angry and said:

“Woe unto you, the Messenger of Allah (SA) was more fearing of Allah than he should say what Allah has not commanded him to say!

and dwell in the everlasting Heaven that my Lord has promised me,

then befriend Ali ibn Abi Talib (and adopt him as his master),
