114. الإمام الباقر عليه السلامـ في قَولِهِ تَعالى : 

114. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, regarding His words:

«يَـأَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ»  ـ:

‘O Messenger! Communicate that which has been sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not, you will not have conveyed His message’ Qur’an, 5:67.

هِيَ الوِلايَةُ .

 “These words refer to guardianship (wilayah).”

115. إثبات الوصيّة:

115. Ithbat al-Wasiyyah:

 لَمّا صارَ [ صلى الله عليه و آله ] بِوادي خُمٍّ نَزَلَ عَلَيهِ الوَحيُ في أميرِ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام آيَةُ العِصمَةِ مِنَ النّاسِ ،

“When he (SA) journeyed to the valley of Khumm, the revelation was revealed upon him regarding the Commander of the Faithful (AS), the verse of immunity from people;

وقَد كانَ الأَمرُ قَبلَ ذلِكَ يَأتيهِ فَيَتَوَقَّفُ ؛

the command would come to him but he was hesitant,

اِنتِظارا لِقَولِ اللّهِ عزّوجلّ :  

waiting for the words of Allah the Almighty:

«وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ»  .

 “And Allah shall protect you from the people.” Qur’an, 5:67.

 فَلَمّا نَزَلَت قامَ خَطيبا ،

When it was revealed, he stood up to deliver a sermon.

فَحَمِدَ اللّهَ وأثنى عَلَيهِ كَثيرا ،

He praised Allah and extolled Him,

ثُمَّ نَصَبَ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام عَلَما وقَيِّما مَقامَهُ بَعدَهُ .

and then he appointed the Commander of the faithful (AS) as leader and guardian.

وكانَ مِن حَديثِ غَديرِ خُمٍّ ما رَواهُ النّاسُ ،

He mentioned what men have recorded with respect to in the tradition of Ghadir Khumm,

ثُمَّ انصَرَفَ في آخِرِ ذِي الحِجَّةِ .

and then he left [to Medina] at the end of Dhu ’l-Hijjah.”

116. تاريخ دمشق عن أبي سعيد الخدري :

116. Tarikh Dimashq, narrating from Abu Saeed al-Khudri:

لَمّا نَصَبَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله عَلِيّا بِغَديرِ خُمٍّ فَنادى لَهُ بِالوِلايَةِ ،

“When the Messenger of Allah (SA) appointed Ali at Ghadir Khumm and announced his guardiandship (wilayah),

هَبَطَ جِبريلُ عليه السلام عَلَيهِ بِهذِهِ الآيَةِ :  

Gabriel (AS) revealed to him this verse:

«الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْاءِسْلَامَ دِينًا»  .

 “Today I have perfected your religion for you and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion.” Qur’an, 5:3.

117. تاريخ اليعقوبي :

117. Tarikh al-Yaqubi:

قَد قيلَ إنَّ آخِرَ ما نَزَلَ عَلَيهِ [النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه و آله ] :  

 “It is said that the last verse revealed upon him [the Prophet] (SA) was:

«الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْاءِسْلَـمَ دِينًا»  ،

“Today I have perfected your religion for you and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion.” Qur’an, 5:3.

وهِيَ الرِّوايَةُ الصَّحيحَةُ الثّابِتَةُ الصَّريحَةُ .

This is the correct, authentic and explicit narration.

وكانَ نُزولُها يَومَ النَّصِّ عَلى أميرِ المُؤمِنينَ عَلِيِّ بنِ أبي طالِبٍ صَلَواتُ اللّهِ عَلَيهِ بِغَديرِ خُمٍّ .

The time for its revelation was the day of the explicit designation of the Commander of the faithful Ali ibn Abi Talib at Ghadir Khumm.”

118. الإمام عليّ عليه السلام :

118. Imam Ali (AS) said:

عَمَّمَني رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) put a turban on my head on the day of Ghadir Khumm,

بِعِمامَةٍ سَوداءَ ،

and it was a black turban

طَرَفُها عَلى مَنكِبي .

whose end fell onto my shoulder.”

119. الإمام زين العابدين عليه السلام :

119. Imam al-Sajjad (AS) said:

إنَّ رَسولَ اللّهِ عَمَّمَ عَلِيَّ بنَ أبي طالِبٍ عِمامَتَهُ السَّحابَةَ

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) put his turban ‘al-Sahabah’ on the head of Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS)

 وأرخاها مِن بَينِ يَدَيهِ ومِن خَلفِهِ ،

and hung the end of it in front of him and over his back.

ثُمَّ قالَ : أقبِل فَأَقبَلَ ،

He then said: “Come forward”, and Ali came forward.

ثُمَّ قالَ : أدبِر فَأَدبَرَ .

The Prophet then said: “Go back”, and Ali stepped back.

فَقالَ : هكَذا جائَتنِي المَلائِكَةُ ،

The Prophet (SA) said: “Thus came to me the angels.”

ثُمَّ قالَ : مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَليٌّ مَولاهُ ،

He continued to say: “Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali is his master.

اللّهُمَّ والِ مَن والاهُ ،

O Allah, befriend whomever befriends him

وعادِ مَن عاداهُ ،

and show enmity towards whomever

وَانصُر مَن نَصَرَهُ ،

shows enmity towards him. Help whoever helps him

وَاخذُل مَن خَذَلَهُ .

and abandon whomever abandons him.”

120. مسند ابن حنبل عن البراء بن عازب :

120. Musnad Ibn Hanbal, narrating from al-Bara’ ibn Azib, who said:

كُنّا مَعَ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله في سَفَرٍ ،

“We were with the Messenger of Allah (SA) on a trip

فَنَزَلنا بِغَديرِ خُمٍّ ،

when we stopped at Ghadir Khumm.

فَنودِيَ فينا :

It was called out to us:

الصَّلاةَ جامِعَةً ،

 “The congregation prayer will be conducted.”

وكُسِحَ لِرَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله تَحتَ شَجَرَتَينِ ،

They swept the area for the Messenger of Allah (SA),

فَصَلَّى الظُّهرَ ،

so he performed the noon prayer,

وأخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ عليه السلام فَقالَ :

and then took the hand of Ali (AS) and said:

أ لَستُم تَعلَمونَ أنّي أولى بِالمُؤمِنينَ مِن أنفُسِهِم ؟

 “Do you not know that I have better right to the believers than their own selves?”

قالوا : بَلى .

They said: “Yes.”

قالَ : أ لَستُم تَعلَمونَ أنّي أولى بِكُلِّ مُؤمِنٍ مِن نَفسِهِ ؟

He (SA) said: “Do you not know that I have better right to every believer than his own self?”

قالوا : بَلى .

They said: “Yes.”

 قالَ : فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ فَقالَ :

He then took the hand of `Ali said:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ ،

 “Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali is his master.

اللّهُمَّ والِ مَن والاهُ وعادِ مَن عاداهُ .

O Allah, befriend whomever befriends him and show enmity to whomever shows enmity towards him.”

 قالَ : فَلَقِيَهُ عُمَرُ بَعدَ ذلِكَ ، فَقالَ لَهُ :

`Umar then met him and said to him:

هَنيئا يَا بنَ أبي طالِبٍ!

“Congratulations, O son of Abu Talib,

أصبَحتَ وأمسَيتَ مَولى كُلِّ مُؤمِنٍ ومُؤمِنَةٍ.

you have become the master of every believer, male and female.”

F) The Recollections of the Companions of the Prophet

1 . أبو سَعيدٍ الخُدرِيُّ

1. Abu Sa`id al-Khudri

121. تاريخ دمشق عن عبد اللّه بن شريك عن سهم بن حصين الأسدي:

121. Tarikh Dimashq, narrating from `Abdullah ibn Sharik, from Sahm ibn Husain al-Asadi, who said:

 قَدِمتُ إلى مَكَّةَ أنَا وعَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عَلقَمَةَ ـ وكانَ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عَلقَمَةَ سَبّابَةً لِعَلِيٍّ دَهرا ـ قالَ :

“I and `Abdullah ibn `Alqama entered Mecca. `Abdullah ibn `Alqamah used to swear at Ali for a decade.

فَقُلتُ لَهُ : هَل لَكَ في هذا ـ يَعني أبا سَعيدٍ الخُدرِيَّ ـ نُحدِثُ بِهِ عَهدا ؟

I said to him: “Would you like to visit Abu Sa`id al-Khudri?”

قالَ : نَعَم ،

He said: “Yes.”

قالَ : فَأَتَيناهُ ،

So, we went to visit him,

فَقالَ :

and `Abdullah ibn `Alqama said:

هَل سَمِعتَ لِعَلِيٍّ ـ رِضوانُ اللّهِ عَلَيهِ ـ مَنقَبَةً ؟

 “Have you heard any excellence regarding Ali – may Allah be pleased with him–?”

قالَ : نَعَم ، إذا حَدَّثتُكَ فَسَل عَنهَا المُهاجِرينَ وَالأَنصارَ وقُرَيشا :

He said: “Yes. When I narrate it to you, ask the Muhajirin, the Ansar and Quraish about it:

 إنَّ رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله قامَ يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ فَأَبلَغَ ،

The Messenger of Allah (SA) stood up on the day of Ghadir Khumm and conveyed the message.

ثُمَّ قالَ :

He then said:

يا أيُّهَا النّاسُ !

“O people!

أ لَستُ أولى بِالمُؤمِنينَ مِن أنفُسِهِم ؟

Do I not have better right to the believers than their own souls?”

قالوا : بَلى ـ قالَها ثَلاثَ مَرّاتٍ ـ

They said: “Yes.” He repeated this three times,

ثُمَّ قالَ :

and then said:

اُدنُ يا عَلِيُّ.

“O Ali, come here.”

فَرَفَعَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَدَيهِ

The Messenger of Allah (SA) raised his hands

حَتّى نَظَرتُ إلى بَياضِ آباطِهِما؛

until I was able to see the whiteness of his armpits,

قالَ :

and he (SA) then said:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ

“Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali now is his master”,

ـ ثَلاثَ مَرّاتٍ ـ .

repeating it three times.”

 قالَ : فَقالَ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عَلقَمَةَ :

`Abdullah ibn `Alqama then said:

أنتَ سَمِعتَ هذا مِن رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ؟

 “Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (SA) yourself?”

قالَ أبو سَعيدٍ :

Abu Sa`id said:

نَعَم ، وأشارَ إلى اُذُنَيهِ وصَدرِهِ ؛

 “Yes”, pointing to his ears and his chest,

قالَ : سَمِعتهُ اُذُنايَ ووَعاهُ قَلبي .

saying: “My ears heard it and my heart memorised it.”

 قالَ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ شَريكٍ :

`Abdullah ibn Sharik then said:

فَقَدِمَ عَلَينا عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عَلقَمَةَ وسَهمُ بنُ حُصَينٍ ،

 “So `Abdullah ibn `Alqama and Sahm ibn Husain came to us.

فَلَمّا صَلَّينَا الهَجيرَ ،

We performed the noon prayer

قامَ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عَلقَمَةَ

and then `Abdullah ibn `Alqamah stood up

فَقالَ :

and said:

إنّي أتوبُ إلَى اللّهِ وأستَغفِرُهُ مِن سَبِّ عَلِيٍّ

“I repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness for my cursing Ali”,

ـ ثَلاثَ مَرّاتٍ ـ .

repeating this three times.”

2 . جابِرُ بنُ عَبدِ اللّهِ

2. Jabir ibn `Abdullah

122. سير أعلام النبلاء عن عبد اللّه بن محمّد بن عقيل :

122. Siyar A`lam al-Nubala’, narrating from `Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn `Aqil who said:

كُنتُ عِندَ جابِرٍ في بَيتِهِ ، وعَلِيُّ بنُ الحُسَينِ ، ومُحَمَّدُ ابنُ الحَنَفِيَّةِ ، وأبو جَعفَرٍ ،

 “I was with Jabir in his house accompanied by Ali ibn al-Husain, Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and Abu Ja`far.

فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِن أهلِ العِراقِ ، فَقالَ :

A man from Iraq came in and said:

أنشُدُكَ بِاللّهِ إلّا حَدَّثتَني ما رَأَيتَ وما سَمِعتَ مِن رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله !

“I implore you by Allah to tell me what you had heard and seen from the Messenger of Allah (SA).”

فَقالَ : كُنّا بِالجُحفَةِ بِغَديرِ خُمٍّ ،

Jabir said: “We were at al-Juhfa at Ghadir Khumm

وثَمَّ ناسٌ كَثيرٌ مِن جُهَينَةَ ومُزَينَةَ وغِفارٍ ،

when there were many people from the Juhayna, Muzayna and Ghifar tribes.

فَخَرَجَ عَلَينا رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله مِن خِباءٍ أو فُسطاطٍ ،

Then the Messenger of Allah (SA) came out from a tent or from behind a canopy

فَأَشارَ بِيَدِهِ ثَلاثا ،

and pointed three times,

فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ رضى الله عنه فَقالَ :

and then took Ali’s hand and said:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ .

 “Whoever has me as his protecting friend, Ali is his master.”

3 . زَيدُ بنُ أرقَمَ

3. Zaid Ibn Arqam

123. المستدرك على الصحيحين عن زيد بن أرقم :

123. Al-Mustadrak `ala al-Sahihain, narrating from Zaid ibn Arqam, who said:

خَرَجنا مَعَ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله

“We went out with the Messenger of Allah (SA)

حَتَّى انتَهَينا إلى غَديرِ خُمٍّ ،

until we got to Ghadir Khumm

فَأمَرَ بِدَوحٍ فَكُسِحَ ،

where he ordered us to sweep under a large tree;

في يَومٍ ما أتى عَلَينا يَومٌ كانَ أشَدَّ حَرّا مِنهُ !

it was an extremely hot day.

فَحَمِدَ اللّهَ وأثنى عَلَيهِ ، وقالَ :

He (SA) praised Allah and lauded Him, and then said:

يا أيُّهَا النّاسُ !

“O People!

إنَّهُ لَم يُبعَث نَبِيٌّ قَطُّ إلّا ما عاشَ نِصفَ ما عاشَ الَّذي كانَ قَبلَهُ ،

No prophet has been sent without living half the lifetime of the prophet before him;

وإنّي اُوشِكُ أن اُدعى فَاُجيبَ ،

I am about to be invited and I will answer.

وإنّي تارِكٌ فيكُم ما لَن تَضِلّوا بَعدَهُ ؛ كِتابَ اللّهِت .

I have left among you that after which you will never go astray: the Book of Almighty Allah.”

 ثُمَّ قامَ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ عليه السلام فَقالَ :

He (SA) then stood up and took Ali’s hand and said:

يا أيُّهَا النّاسُ !

“O people!

مَن أولى بِكُم مِن أنفُسِكُم ؟

Who is more worthy of you than yourselves?”

قالوا : اللّهُ ورَسولُهُ أعلَمُ !  

They said: “Allah and His Messenger know more.”

قالَ : مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ .

He said: “Whoever has adopted me as his mater, Ali now is his master.”

G) The Recollections of Imam Ali (AS)

124. الإمام عليّ عليه السلام :

124. Imam Ali (AS) said:

خَرَجَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله إلى حِجَّةِ الوَداعِ ،

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) left for the Farewell Pilgrimage;

ثُمَّ صارَ إلى غَديرِ خُمٍّ ،

on his way back he reached Ghadir Khumm.

فَأَمَرَ فَاُصلِحَ لَهُ شِبهُ المِنبَرِ ،

something like a pulpit was made at his request,

ثُمَّ عَلاهُ وأخَذَ بِعَضُدي

and then he ascended it, pulling my arm up

حَتّى رُئِيَ بَياضُ إبطَيهِ ،

until the whiteness of his underarm was seen.

رافِعا صَوتَهُ قائِلاً في مَحفِلِهِ :

He raised his voice saying:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ ،

“Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali is his master.

اللّهُمَّ والِ مَن والاهُ

O Allah, befriend whomever befriends him

وعادِ مَن عاداهُ .

and show enmity towards whomever has enmity to him.”

 فَكانَت عَلى وِلايَتي وِلايَةُ اللّهِ ،

Therefore, my friendship is friendship to Allah

وعَلى عَداوَتي عَداوَةُ اللّهِ .

and enmity towards me is enmity towards Allah.

 وأنزَلَ اللّهُ عزّ وجلّ في ذلِكَ اليَومِ :  

Allah revealed the following verse on that day:

«الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْاءِسْلَـمَ دِينًا»  . المائدة : 3 .

 “Today I have perfected your religion for you and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion.” Qur’an, 5:3.

 فَكانَت وِلايَتي كَمالَ الدّينِ ،

So, my guardianship has constituted the perfection of religion

ورِضَى الرَّبِّ جَلَّ ذِكرُهُ .

and the approval of the Lord.”

125. الاحتجاج:

125. Al-Ihtijaj:

 قالَ أميرُ المُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام [بَعدَ وَفاةِ الرَّسولِ صلى الله عليه و آله وَانتِخابِ أبي بَكرٍ ] :

 “The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said [after the death of the Messenger of Allah (SA) and the election of Abu Bakr]:

يا مَعاشِرَ المُهاجِرينَ وَالأَنصارِ ،

“O groups of Muhajirin and Ansar,

اللّهَ اللّهَ لاتَنسَوا عَهدَ نَبِيِّكُم إلَيكُم في أمري ،

keep Allah in mind and do not forget your Prophet’s covenant with you regarding my affair.

ولا تُخرِجوا سَلطانَ مُحَمَّدٍ صلى الله عليه و آله مِن دارِهِ وقَعرِ بَيتِهِ إلى دورِكُم وقَعرِ بُيوتِكُم ،

Do not take the authority of Muhammad (SA) out from his residence and out of his house into your residence and your houses.

ولاتَدفَعوا أهلَهُ عَن حَقِّهِ ومَقامِهِ في النّاسِ !

Do not repel his family from their right and their status among people!

فَوَاللّهِ يا مَعاشِرَ الجَمعِ !

By Allah, O group of people!

إنَّ اللّهَ قَضى وحَكَمَ ونَبِيُّهُ أعلَمُ

Allah has judged and decreed, and His Prophet knows best,

وأنتُم تَعلَمونَ أنّا أهلَ البَيتِ أحَقُّ بِهذَا الأَمرِ مِنكُم ،

as you know, that we the Ahlul Bayt have better right to this affair than you have.

أ ما كانَ القارِئُ مِنكُم لِكِتابِ اللّهِ ،

Is there not a reader of the Book of Allah among you,

الفَقيهُ في دينِ اللّهِ ،

or a scholar in the religion of Allah

المُضطَلِعُ بِأَمرِ الرَّعِيَّةِ ؟

who knows the affairs of the citizens?

وَاللّهِ إنَّهُ لفينا لا فيكُم !

By Allah, it is with us but not with you!

فَلا تَتَّبِعُوا الهَوى فَتَزدادوا مِنَ الحَقِّ بُعداً ،

So, do not follow caprice, or you will increase in your distance away from the truth

وتُفسِدوا قَديمَكُم بِشَرٍّ مِن حَديثِكُم .

and you will corrupt your past with what is worse than your present.”

 فَقالَ بَشيرُ بنُ سَعدٍ الأَنصارِيُّ الَّذي وَطَّأَ الأَرضَ لِأَبي بَكرٍ ،

Bashir ibn Sa`d al-Ansari who prepared the grounds for Abu Bakr said,

وقالَت جَماعَةٌ مِنَ الأَنصارِ :

even as a group of the Ansar said:

يا أبَا الحَسَنِ ،

“O Abu al-Hasan,

لَو كانَ هذَا الأَمرُ سَمِعَتهُ مِنكَ الأَنصارُ قَبلَ بَيعَتِها لِأَبي بَكرٍ

if the Ansar had heard this affair from you before their pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr,

مَا اختَلَفَ فيكَ اثنانِ.

even two people would not have disputed about you.”

فَقالَ عَلِيٌّ عليه السلام : ياهؤُلاءِ !

Ali (AS) said: “O people!

أ كُنتُ أدَعُ رَسولَ اللّهِ مُسَجّىً لا اُواريهِ وأخرُجُ اُنازِعُ في سُلطانِهِ ؟

Should I have left the Messenger of Allah lying down without a shroud and come out and fight over his ruling [caliphate]?

وَاللّهِ ماخِفتُ أحَداً يَسمو لَهُ ويُنازِعُنا أهلَ البَيتِ فيهِ ،

By Allah, I never thought that someone would appoint himself

ويَستَحِلُّ مَا استَحلَلتُموهُ ،

and fight with us the Ahlul Bayt over it.

ولا عَلِمتُ أنَّ رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله تَرَكَ يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ لِأَحَدٍ حُجَّةً ،

I would not see the Messenger of Allah (SA) leave any excuse for anyone on the day of Ghadir Khumm

ولا لِقائِلٍ مَقالاً .

or for a speaker to make a statement.”

126. فاطمة عليهاالسلام بنت رسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله

126. Fatimah al-Zahra’ (AS) said

ـ لَمّا مُنِعَت فَدَكَ وخاطَبَتِ الأَنصارَ ،

- after Fadak was usurped from her and she spoke to the Ansar,

فَقالوا : يا بِنتَ مُحَمَّدٍ ،

who said: “O daughter of Muhammad,

لَو سَمِعنا هذَا الكَلامَ مِنكَ قَبلَ بَيعَتِنا لِأَبي بَكرٍ

if we had heard these words from you before our pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr,

ما عَدَلنا بِعَلِيٍّ أحَدا ،

we would not have replaced Ali with anyone” -:

فَقالَت ـ: وهَل تَرَكَ أبي يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ لِأَحَدٍ عُذرا ؟

 “Did my father leave an excuse for anyone on the day of Ghadir Khumm?”

127. Fatimah al-Zahra’ (AS) said:

أنَسيتُم قَولَ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ :

“Have you forgotten the statement of the Messenger of Allah (SA) on the day of Ghadir Khumm:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ ؟

 “Whoever has me as his master, Ali is his master?”

128. مسند ابن حنبل عن أبي الطفيل :

128. Masnad Ibn Hanbal, narrating from Abu al-Tufayl, who said:

جَمَعَ عَلِيٌّ رضى الله عنه النّاسَ فِي الرَّحبَةِ ،

“Ali (AS) gathered the people in al-Rahbah

ثُمَّ قالَ لَهُم :

and then said to them:

أنشُدُ اللّهَ كُلَّ امرِئٍ مُسلِمٍ سَمِعَ رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَقولُ يَومَ غَديرِ خُمٍّ ما سَمِعَ لَمّا قامَ .

 “I implore by Allah every Muslim who heard from the Messenger of Allah (SA) his words on the day of Ghadir Khumm to stand forth.

فَقامَ ثَلاثونَ مِنَ النّاسِ ـ

Then thirty people from among them stood up,

وقالَ أبو نَعيمٍ :

and Abu al-Na`im said:

فَقامَ ناسٌ كَثيرٌ ـ

“Many people stood up

فَشَهِدوا حينَ أخَذَهُ بِيَدِهِ فَقالَ لِلنّاسِ :

and bore witness that when he (SA) took Ali’s hand he said to the people:

أ تَعلَمونَ أنّي أولى بِالمُؤمِنينَ مِن أنفُسِهِم ؟

 “Do you know that I have better right to people than their own souls?”

قالوا : نَعَم يا رَسولَ اللّهِ .

They all said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”

قالَ : مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَهذا مَولاهُ ،

He said: “Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali is his master.

اللّهُمَّ والِ مَن والاهُ وعادِ مَن عاداهُ .

O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and show enmity towards whoever has enmity to him.”

 قالَ : فَخَرَجتُ وكَأَنَّ في نَفسي شَيئا ،

I then left having a feeling of hesitation.

فَلَقيتُ زَيدَ بنَ أرقَمَ ، فَقُلتُ لَهُ :

I met Zaid ibn Arqam, so I said to him:

إنّي سَمِعتُ عَلِيّا رضى الله عنه يَقولُ كَذا وكَذا .

“I heard Ali (AS) say such and such.”

قالَ : فَما تُنكِرُ ؟

Zaid said: “Then what do you deny?

قَد سَمِعتُ رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَقولُ ذلِكَ لَهُ .

I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (SA) say that in favour of him.”

129. السنّة عن المهاجر بن عميرة أو عميرة بن المهاجر:

129. Al-Sunnah, narrating from al-Muhajir ibn `Umayra, or `Umayra ibn al-Muhajir who said:

سَمِعتُ عَلِيّا رضى الله عنه ناشَدَ النّاسَ عَلَى المِنبَرِ :

“I heard Ali (AS) implore people on the pulpit, saying:

مَن سَمِعَ رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَقولُ :

“Who heard the Messenger of Allah (SA) say:

مَن كُنتُ مَولاهُ فَعَلِيٌّ مَولاهُ ؟

“Whoever has adopted me as his master, Ali is his master?”

فَقامَ اثنا عَشَرَ رَجُلاً ، فَقالوا :

Twelve men stood up and said:

سَمِعنا رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَقولُهُ .

 “We heard the Messenger of Allah (SA) say that.”

130. رسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله :

130. The Prophet (SA) said:

يَومُ غَديرِ خُمٍّ أفضَلُ أعيادِ اُمَّتي

“The day of Ghadir Khumm is the best of the festivals of my ummah.

وهُوَ اليَومُ الَّذي أمَرَنِي اللّهُ تَعالى ذِكرُهُ فيهِ بِنَصبِ أخي عَلِيِّ بنِ أبي طالِبٍ عَلَما لِاُمَّتي ،

It is the day in which Allah commanded me to appoint my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib as a sign for my ummah

يَهتَدونَ بِهِ مِن بَعدي ،

by whom they will be guided after me.

وهُوَ اليَومُ الَّذي أكمَلَ اللّهُ فيهِ الدّينَ ،

It is the day in which Allah perfected His religion,

وأتَمَّ عَلى اُمَّتي فيهِ النِّعمَةَ ،

completed the blessings over my ummah,

ورَضِيَ لَهُمُ الاِءسلامَ دينا .

and He approved for them Islam as their religion.”

131. مصباح المتهجّد عن الفيّاض بن محمّد الطرسوسي :

131. Misbah al-Mutahajjid, narrating from al-Fayyaz ibn Muhammad al-Tarsusi,

أَنّهُ شَهِدَ أبَا الحَسَنِ عَلِيَّ بنَ موسى الرِّضا عليه السلام في يَومِ الغَديرِ

who saw Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Musa al-Riza (AS) on the day of Ghadir,

وبِحَضرَتِهِ جَماعَةٌ مِن خاصَّتِهِ قَدِ احتَبَسَهُم لِلإِفطارِ ،

accompanied by a group of his companions of distinction whom he had invited for fast-breaking.

وقَد قَدَّمَ إلى مَنازِلِهِمُ الطَّعامَ وَالبُرَّ وَالصِّلاتِ وَالكِسوَةَ

He distributed food, wheat, gifts and clothes to their houses,

حَتَّى الخَواتيمَ وَالنِّعالَ ،

and he even gave them rings and sandals.

وقَد غَيَّرَ مِن أحوالِهِم وأحوالِ حاشِيَتِهِ ،

He changed their state and the state of those around him.

وجُدِّدَت لَهُ آلَةٌ غَيرُ الآلَةِ الَّتي جَرَى الرَّسمُ بِابتِذالِها قَبلَ يَومِهِ ،

His old belongings were replaced with new ones,

وهُوَ يَذكُرُ فَضلَ اليَومِ وقِدَمَهُ .

when he kept on commending the virtue of the day and its history.”
