132. Sahih al-Bukhari, narrating from al-Zuhri, from `Ubaidullah ibn `Abdullah from Ibn `Abbas, who said:

“When the Messenger of Allah (SA) was on his deathbed

accompanied by a number of men among whom was ‘Umar ibn al-khattab,

the Prophet (SA) said:

“Come forward, and I write for you a letter after which you will not go astray.”

`Umar said:

“The Prophet (SA) has been overcome by his sickness!

You have the Qur’an,

and the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.”

So the people in the house differed and started disputing.

Some of them said:

“Come close he will write for you a letter after which you will not go astray.”

Others said what `Umar had said.

So when their foolish talk and disputes increased in the presence of the Prophet (SA),

the Messenger of Allah (SA) said: “Stand forth.”

`Ubaidullah said: “Ibn `Abbas would say:

“The real calamity is preventing the Messenger of Allah (SA) from writing that letter for them,

out of their dispute and their clamour.”

Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 5, p. 2146, h. 5345.

133. Sahih al-Bukhari, narrating from Ibn `Abbas, who said:

“Thursday! What a Thursday it was!”

The illness of the Messenger of Allah (SA) became intense,

so he said: “Bring me, and I will write a letter for you after which you will never go astray.”

The people started to dispute about this matter, when people should not dispute in the presence of a Prophet.

They said: “What is wrong with him?

Did he talk in delirium?

Ask him!”

They started to answer him back,

he (SA) said: “Leave me,

for the state in which I am now is better than what you are calling me to.”

[Ibn al-Athir said: Hajara, yahjuru, hajr means to mix one’s words and talk in delirium (i.e. utter delirius words). An example for this is the tradition of the illness of the Prophet (SA), when they said: “What is wrong with him? Did he talk in delirium?” meaning that his words have become inconsistent because of his illness, being in the form of a question, saying: “Have his words changed and are they mixed because of his illness?” This is the best way to justify it. It is not to be said in the form of declaration, or else it would be attributing an insult to the Prophet (SA), because the speaker was `Umar, who would not have said it in such a way. al-Nihayah, vol. 5, pp. 245-246.]

Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 4, p. 1612, h. 4168.

134. Sahih Muslim, narrating from Sa`id ibn Jubair, from Ibn `Abbas, who said:

“Thursday! What Thursday it was?”

[Sa`id said] He then wept

so much that I saw his tears on his cheeks like a chain of pearls.

He [Ibn `Abbas] then said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) said:

“Bring me a shoulder bone (katif: A wide bone that is used for writing due to the shortage of paper (or parchment). al-Nihayah, vol. 4, p. 150.)

and a pen, and I write a letter for you after which you will never go astray.”

They said: “The Messenger of Allah (SA) is talking in delirium!”

[The incident of the Messenger of Allah (SA) desiring to write a will and the second Caliph preventing him from doing so is considered a critical and controversial incident. The Messenger of Allah (SA) who “does not speak out of [his own] desire; it is just a revelation that is revealed [to him],” [Qur’an, 53:3-4] decided to explain issues to the Islamic ummah at the end of his life. Even if the Prophet was a normal person, this request of his should have been fulfilled, let alone he wished to write a letter for the ummah after which they would never go astray.  What is surprising here is that the second Caliph opposed that simple request which had a very important result. The reasons for this opposition are of course obvious, and the historical sources have mentioned them. However, even if no historical source has stated what he meant, any fair researcher can perceive the reality of the issue through putting this event beside the event of al-Saqifa and `Umar’s assuming the post of Caliphate.  It can be understood from the historical sources that there were a group that backed `Umar and supported him in the stand he took. This indicates the existence of a group that had a presence even in the private gatherings of the Messenger of Allah (SA), to the extent that disputation and clamour intensified and the writing of the will became useless.  What is more unusual than this is that some tried to confirm the validity of what the Caliph did, while degrading the Messenger of Allah (SA). He said: “This is among the signs of the knowledge of `Umar and his virtues and accurate observation, because he feared that he (SA) would write things the people would probably be incapable of following, thus deserving punishment for it, because they would be in writing and there is no place for ijtihad in it.” [Sharh Sahih Muslim, by al-Nawawi, vol. 11, p. 99, footnote of h. 1637].  In other words, the Prophet (SA) is saying to them: “I want to write a letter for you with which you will never go astray.” But these people are saying: “The writing of the Prophet will necessitate punishment, and `Umar’s opposing is a sign of his understanding, virtue and accurate observation!! In view of this clear contradiction between the opinion of the Prophet (SA) and the opinion of the second Caliph, how can we interpret this in virtue of `Umar?! What is even more surprising is the justification mentioned by al-Qazi `Ayyaz regarding the whole event, where he distorted it from its original picture and mentioned it in an opposite way, saying: “Did the Messenger of Allah (SA) utter delirius words? Thus is mentioned in Sahih Muslim and other books: Did he talk in delirium? It is in the form of a question not in the form of declaration: He has talked in delirium. This is because none of this is appropriate for him (SA), because the meaning of hajara is hadha – has talked non-sense. This was said by the person in the form of a question in denial of those who said: Do not write. `Umar’s words: “The Book of Allah is sufficient for us,” were a reply to those who disputed with him, but not to the command of the Prophet (SA).” [al-Shifa bi ta`rif huquq al-Mustafa, vol. 2, p. 194]. Is there any kind of distortion clearer than this?! It is evident that if this text had not been recorded by Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it would then have reached us in this distorted form.]

135. Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, narrating from Ibn `Umar, who said:

“The Prophet (SA) sent a company, among whom were Abu Bakr and `Umar.

He (SA) appointed Usamah ibn Zaid over them,

so the people started to speak ill of him –because of his young age.

When the news reached the Messenger of Allah (SA),

he stood upon the pulpit,

praised Allah and lauded Him, and then said:

“The people have spoken ill of the commandership of Usamah,

even as they had spoken ill of the commandership of his father before him.

Indeed, both of them are befitting for it,

and from aspect of family he is one of the dearest men to me,

so I urge you to be good to Usamah.”
