171. Muruj al-Dhahab:

بَنى ]عُثمانُ[ دارَهُ فِي المَدينَةِ ،

“He [`Uthman] built his house in Medina

وشَيَّدَها بِالحَجَرِ وَالكِلسِ ،

and constructed it with stone and lime.

وجَعَلَ أبوابَها مِنَ السّاجِ وَالعَرعَرِ ،

Its doors were made of teak and juniper,

وَاقتَنى أموالاً وجِنانا وعُيونا بِالمَدينَةِ .

even as he obtained money, gardens and wells in Medina.

 وذَكَرَ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ عُتبَةَ أنَّ عُثمانَ يَومَ قُتِلَ

`Abdullah ibn `Utba said that on the day `Uthman was killed,

كانَ لَهُ ـ عِندَ خازِنِهِ ـ مِنَ المالِ خَمسونَ ومِئَةُ ألفِ دينارٍ ، وألفُ ألفِ دِرهَمٍ ،

he had one hundred and fifty thousand dinars and one million dirhams;

وقيمَةُ ضِياعِهِ بِوادِي القُرى وحُنَينٍ وغَيرِهِما مِئَةُ ألفِ دينارٍ ،

his estates in the valley of al-Qura and Hunain amounted to one hundred thousand dinars.

وخَلَّفَ خَيلاً كَثيرا وإبِلاً .

He also left behind many horses and camels.”

172. Ansab al-Ashraf, narrating from Sulaym, from Abu Amir, who said:

رَأَيتُ عَلى عُثمانَ بُردا ثَمَنُهُ مِئَةُ دينارٍ .

 “I saw a cloak on `Uthman, which is equal to one hundred dinars.”

173. Ansab al-Ashraf, narrating from Ibn `Abbas, who said:

 كانَ مِمّا أنكَروا عَلى عُثمانَ

“Among the things for which men would criticise `Uthman was that

أنَّهُ وَلَّى الحَكَمَ ابنَ أبِي العاصِ صَدَقاتِ قُضاعَةَ (قُضاعَة : حيّ باليمن. تاج العروس : ج11 ص377) ،

he appointed al-Hakam ibn Abi al-As to receive the alms tax of the people of Quza`ah. [Quza`ah: A district in Yemen. Taj al-`Arus, vol. 11, p. 377]

فَبَلَغَت ثَلاثَمِئَةِ ألفِ دِرهَمٍ ،

It reached three hundred thousand dirhams;

فَوَهَبَها لَهُ حينَ أتاهُ بِها .

when al-Hakam brought it to `Uthman, he granted it all to him.”

174. Tarikh Abi al-Fida’:

 أقطَعَ [عُثمانُ] مَروانَ بنَ الحَكَمِ فَدَكَ ،

“He [`Uthman] granted Fadak to Marwan ibn al-Hakam,

وهِيَ صَدَقَةُ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله الَّتي طَلَبَتها فاطِمَةُ ميراثا !

even though it was the charity of the Messenger of Allah (SA) which Fatimah demanded to be given back to her as inheritance.

فَرَوى أبو بَكرٍ عَن رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله :

Abu Bakr had quoted the Messenger of Allah (SA) saying:

نَحنُ مَعاشِرَ الأَنبِياءِ لا نُوَرِّثُ ، ما تَرَكناهُ صَدَقَةٌ .

 “We the prophets do not bequeath; what we leave is charity.”

ولَم تَزَل فَدَكُ في يَد مَروانَ وبَنيهِ إلى أن تَوَلّى عُمَرُ بنُ عَبدِ العَزيزِ ، فَانتَزَعَها مِن أهلِهِ ورَدَّها صَدَقَةً .

It continued to be in the hands of Marwan and his children until the reign of `Umar ibn `Abd al-`Aziz who took it away from them and returned it as charity.”

(فدك : قرية من قرى اليهود بينها وبين المدينة يومان ، وكانت لرسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله لأنّه فتحها هو وأمير المؤمنين عليه السلام ، وأعطاها رسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله لفاطمة وكانت في يدها إلى أن توفّي رسول اللّه صلى الله عليه و آله ، فأُخذت من فاطمة بالقهر والغلبة. مجمع البحرين : ج 3 ص 1370 «فدك») .

[Fadak: A Jewish valley that is a two-day trip away from Medina. It belonged to the Messenger of Allah (SA) after he had conquered it with the Commander of the Faithful (AS). He gave it to his daughter Fatimah (AS). It was in her hands until the Messenger of Allah (SA) passed away, and then it was taken from her by force. 175. Al-Ma`arif, by Ibn Qutayba:

تَصَدَّقَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله بِمَهزورٍ ـ مَوضِعِ سوقِ المَدينَةِ ـ عَلَى المُسلِمينَ ،

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) granted Mahzur [a marketplace in Medina] to the Muslims as charity,

فَأَقطَعَها عُثمانُ الحارِثَ بنَ الحَكَمِ ؛

but `Uthman gave it to al-Harith ibn al-Hakam,

أخا مَروانَ بنِ الحَكَمِ ،

a brother of Marwan ibn al-Hakam,

وأقطَعَ مَروانَ فَدَكَ

and he [`Uthman] gave Fadak to Marwan,

وهِيَ صَدَقَةُ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله.

even though it was the charity of the Messenger of Allah (SA).”611

176. Tarikh al-Ya`qubi:

زَوَّجَ عُثمانُ بِنتَهُ مِن عَبدِ اللّهِ بنِ خالِدِ بنِ اُسَيدٍ ،

“`Uthman married his daughter to `Abdullah ibn Khalid ibn Usayd

وأمَرَ لَهُ بِستِّمِئَةِ ألفِ دِرهَمٍ ،

and ordered that seven hundred thousand dirhams be given to him.

وكَتَبَ إلى عَبدِ اللّهِ بنِ عامِرِ أن يَدفَعَها إلَيهِ مِن بَيتِ مالِ البَصرَةِ .

He wrote to `Abdullah ibn Amir [his governor over Basra] to pay it to him from the Muslim Treasury of Basra.”

وطَلَبَ إلَيهِ ] إلى عُثمانَ [ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ خالِدِ بنِ اُسَيدٍ صِلةً ،

“` When Abdullah ibn Khalid ibn Usayd requested from `Uthman a grant,

فَأَعطاهُ أربَعَمِئَةِ ألفِ دِرهَمٍ .

 أعطى ] عثمانُ [ أبا سُفيانَ بنَ حَربٍ مِئَتَي ألفٍ مِن بَيتِ المالِ ،

 “He [`Uthman] gave Abu Sufyan ibn Harb two hundred thousand from the Muslim Treasury,

فِي اليَومِ الَّذي أمَرَ فيهِ لِمَروانَ بنِ الحَكَمِ بِمِئَةِ ألفٍ مِن بَيتِ المالِ .

even as he ordered that two hundred thousand be given to Marwan ibn al-Hakam from the Muslim Treasury.”

179. Ansab al-Ashraf, narrating from Musa ibn Talha, who said:

 أعطى عُثمانُ طَلحَةَ في خِلافَتِهِ مِئَتَي ألفِ دينارٍ .

 “During `Uthman’s Caliphate, he gave Talha two hundred thousand dinars.”

180. تاريخ المدينة عن موسى بن طَلحَة :

180. Tarikh al-Madinah, narrating from Musa ibn Talha, who said:

أوَّلُ مَن أقطَعَ بِالعِراقِ عُثمانُ بن عَفّانَ قَطائِعَ مِمّا كانَ مِن صَوافي آلِ كَسرى ، ومِمّا جَلا عَنهُ أهلُهُ ،

“`Uthman was the first to give out lands that were special to the progeny of the Iranian commanders.

فَقَطَعَ لِطَلحَةَ ابنِ عُبَيدِ اللّهِ النَّشاستَجَ .

He gave al-Nashastaj to Talha ibn `Ubaidullah.”

(نَشاسْتَج : ضيعة أو نهر بالكوفة ، وكانت عظيمة كثيرة الدخل. معجم البلدان : ج5 ص285) .

181. الطبقات الكبرى عن أبي حصين:

181. Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, narrating from Abu Husain, who said:

 إنَّ عُثمانَ أجازَ الزُّبَيرَ بنَ العَوّامِ بِسِتِّمِئَةِ ألفٍ ،

“`Uthman allowed al-Zubayr ibn al-`Awwam to take six hundred thousand [dirhams from the Muslim Treasury].

فَنَزَلَ عَلى أخوالِهِ ؛ بَني كاهِلٍ ،

He went to visit his maternal uncles the Bani Kahil

فَقالَ : أيُّ المالِ أجوَدُ ؟

and he said to them: “Which of the wealth is better?”

قالوا : مالُ أصبَهانَ .

They said: “The wealth of Esfahan.”

قالَ : أعطوني مِن مالِ أصبَهانَ .

He said: “Then give me the wealth of Esfahan.”

182. Tarikh al-Ya`qubi:

كَتَبَ عُثمانُ إلَى الحَكَمِ بنِ أبِي العاصِ أن يَقدَمَ عَلَيهِ ـ وكانَ طَريدَ رَسولِ اللّهِ ـ

 “`Uthman wrote to al-Hakam ibn al-As whowas banished by the Messenger of Allah (SA) to come to him.

وقَد كانَ عُثمانُ لَمّا وُلِّيَ أبو بَكرٍ اِجتَمَعَ هُوَ وقَومٌ مِن بَني اُمَيَّةَ إلى أبي بَكرٍ ،

When Abu Bakr was the Caliph, `Uthman and a group from Bani Umayyah went to meet Abu Bakr

فَسَأَلوهُ فِي الحَكَمِ ، فَلَم يَأذَن لَهُ ،

and asked him to return al- Hakam, but he refused to permit him; they also tried

فَلَمّا وُلِّيَ عُمَرُ فَعلوا ذلِكَ ،

when `Umar was Caliph, but he also refused to allow him.

فَلَم يَأذَن لَهُ فَأَنكَرَ النّاسُ إذنَهُ لَهُ .

So, the people were displeased with `Uthman allowing al-Hakam to return.

 وقالَ بَعضُهُم : رَأَيتُ الحَكَمَ بنَ أبِي العاصِ يَومَ قَدِمَ المَدينَةَ

A person [from Medina] said: “I saw al-Hakam ibn al-As on the day he entered Medina,

عَلَيهِ فزر خلقٍ ، وهُوَ يَسوق تَيسا ،

wearing old and torn clothes having a billy goat with him.

حَتّى دَخَلَ دارَ عُثمانَ ، وَالنّاسُ يَنظُرونَ إلى سوءِ حالِهِ وحالِ مَن مَعَهُ ،

He entered the house of `Uthman while the people were watching his bad conditions.

ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وعَلَيهِ جُبَّةُ خَزٍّ وطَيلَسانٌ .

However, he came out [of `Uthman’s house] wearing a silk coat and a green cloak.”

183. مُروج الذّهبـ في ذِكرِ ما طُعِنَ بِهِ عَلى عُثمانَ ـ:

183. Muruj al-Dhahab, quoting the defects and faults of `Uthman:

ومِن ذلِكَ ما فَعَلَ بِأَبي ذَرٍّ ؛

“Among that is what he did to Abu Dharr:

وَهُوَ أنَّهُ حَضَرَ مَجلِسَهُ ذاتَ يَومٍ ،

he was present in one of `Uthman’s gatherings,

فَقالَ عُثمانُ : أ رَأَيتُم مَن زَكّى مالَهُ ،

when `Uthman said: “What do you think: if a person gives the alms tax of his money,

هَل فيهِ حَقٌّ لِغَيرِهِ ؟

is there any other rights due?”

فَقالَ كَعبٌ : لا ، يا أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ .

Ka`b said: “No, O Commander of the faithful.”

 فَدَفَعَ أبو ذَرٍّ في صَدرِ كَعبٍ ،

Abu Dharr hit Ka`b on his chest

وَقالَ لَهُ :

and said to him:

كَذِبتَ يَابنَ اليَهودِيِّ ،

“O son of the Jewish woman, you have lied.”

ثُمَّ تَلا :  

He then recited the verse:

«لَّيْسَ الْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّواْ وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَ الْمَغْرِبِ» اَلآيَةَ . البقرة : 177 .

 “Piety is not to turn your faces to the east or the west.” Qur’an, 2:177.

 فَقالَ عُثمانُ : أ تَرَونَ بَأسا أن نَأخُذَ مالاً مِن بَيتِ مالِ المُسلِمينَ

`Uthman said: “Do you find it wrong for us to take money from the Muslim Treasury

فَنُنفِقَهُ فيما يَنوبُنا مِن اُمورِنا ،

and spend it on our own affairs,

ونُعطيكُموهُ ؟

or to give it to you?”

فَقالَ كَعبٌ : لا بَأسَ بِذلِكَ .

Ka`b said:  “There is no problem with that.”

 فَرَفَعَ أبو ذَرٍّ العَصا ،

Abu Dharr raised his stick,

فَدَفَعَ بِها في صَدرِ كَعبٍ ،

hit Ka`b’s chest with it,

وَقالَ :

and said:

يَابنَ اليَهودِيِّ ما أجرَأَكَ عَلَى القَولِ في دينِنا !

 “O son of the Jewish woman, you are too bold to give an opinion about our religion?”

 فَقالَ لَهُ عُثمانُ : ما أكثَرَ أذاكَ لي !

`Uthman then said: “Why do you hurt me?

غَيِّب وَجهَكَ عَنّي ؛ فَقَد آذَيتَنا .

Get your face away from me, since you have hurt me much.”

فَخَرَجَ أبو ذَرٍّ إلَى الشّامِ .

Abu Dharr then left to Syria.

 فَكَتَبَ مُعاوِيَةُ إلى عُثمانَ :

After this, Mu`awiyah wrote to `Uthman, saying:

إنَّ أبا ذَرٍّ تَجتَمِعُ إلَيهِ الجُموعُ ،

“Crowds of people gather around Abu Dharr,

ولا آمَنُ أن يُفسِدَهُم عَلَيكَ ،

and I fear that he will corrupt them against you;

فَإِن كانَ لَكَ فِي القَومِ حاجَةٌ فَاحمِلَهُ إلَيكَ .

if you need these people, then you must bring him back to you.”

 فَكَتَبَ إلَيهِ عُثمانُ بِحَملِهِ .

`Uthman wrote back to him asking him to return him.

فَحَمَلَهُ عَلى بَعيرٍ ، عَلَيهِ قَتَبٌ يابِسٌ ،

Mu`awiyah put him on a camel that had a dry saddle,

مَعَهُ خَمسَةٌ مِنَ الصَّقالِبَةِ  يَطيرونَ بِهِ ،

accompanied by five harsh people, hastening

حَتّى أتَوا بِهِ المَدينَةَ ،

until they reached Medinah.

وقَد تَسَلَّخَت بَواطِنُ أفخاذِهِ ، وكادَ أن يَتلِفَ ،

The skin of his thighs was torn off and he was about to die.

فَقيلَ لَهُ : إنَّكَ تَموتُ مِن ذلِكَ .

They said to him: “You were about to die because of this.”

فَقالَ : هَيهاتَ ، لَن أموتَ حَتّى اُنفى .

He said: “Far be it, I will not die until I am banished.”

وذَكَرَ جَوامِعَ ما يَنزِلُ بِهِ بَعدُ ،

He then narrated to them that which would happen to him

ومَن يَتَوَلّى دَفنَهُ .

and who would bury him.

 فَأَحسَنَ إلَيهِ في دارِهِ أيّاما ،

`Uthman took good care of him in his house for a few days,

ثُمَّ دَخَلَ إلَيهِ فَجَلَسَ عَلى رُكبَتَيهِ ،

and then visited him and sat with him on his knees.

وتَكَلَّمَ بِأَشياءَ ،

He spoke with him

وذَكَرَ الخَبَرَ في وُلدِ أبِي العاصِ :

and mentioned to him the prophetic tradition about the children of Abu al-As:

«إذا بَلَغوا ثَلاثينَ رَجُلاً اِتَّخَذوا عِبادَ اللّهِ خَوَلاً» . . .

“If they reach thirty, they will make the servants of Allah slaves.”.....

وكانَ في ذلِكَ اليَومِ قَد اُتِيَ عُثمانُ بِتَرَكَةِ عَبدِ الرَّحمنِ بنِ عَوفٍ الزُّهرِيِّ مِنَ المالِ ،

On that day the leftover money of `Abd al-Rahman ibn `Awf al-Zuhri was brought to `Uthman,

فَنُثِرَتِ البِدَرُ حَتّى حالَت بَينَ عُثمانَ وبَينَ الرَّجُلِ القائِمِ ،

and the bags brought were so much that it blocked between `Uthman and the man standing up.

فَقالَ عُثمانُ : إنّي لَأَرجو لِعَبدِ الرَّحمنِ خَيرا ؛

`Uthman said: “I wish the best for `Abd al-Rahman,

لِأَنَّهُ كانَ يَتَصَدَّقُ ،

because he would give as charity,

ويُقرِي الضَّيفَ ،

he was hospitable to guests

وتَرَكَ ما تَرَونَ .

and he left all that you see.”

 فَقالَ كَعبُ الأَحبارِ : صَدَقتَ يا أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ ،

Ka`b al-Ahbar said: “O Commander of the Faithful, you are right.”

فَشالَ أبو ذَرٍّ العَصا ، فَضَرَبَ بِها رَأسَ كَعبٍ ، ولَم يَشغَلهُ ما كانَ فيهِ مِنَ الأَلَمِ ،

Abu Dharr then raised his stick and hit Ka`b’s head with it.

وقالَ : يَابنَ اليَهودِيِّ تَقولُ لِرَجُلٍ ماتَ وتَرَكَ هذَا المالَ :

He then said: “O son of the Jewish woman, you say about a man who has died and left all this money:

إنَّ اللّهَ أعطاهُ خَيرَ الدُّنيا وخَيرَ الآخِرَةِ ،

Allah has given him the best of this world and the best of the hereafter,

وتَقطَعُ عَلَى اللّهِ بِذلِكَ !

and you attribute that to Allah with certainty.

وأنَا سَمِعتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه و آله يَقولُ :

I heard the Messenger of Allah (SA) say:

«ما يَسُرُّني أن أموتَ وأدَعَ ما يَزِنُ قيراطا» ! !

“I would not be pleased to die and leave behind that which amounts to one carat.”

 فَقالَ لَهُ عُثمانُ : وارِ عَنّي وَجهَكَ .

`Uthman said to him: “Leave me alone.”

فَقالَ : أسيرُ إلى مَكَّةَ ؟

Abu Dharr said: “I shall go to Mecca?”

قالَ : لا وَاللّهِ .

`Uthman said: “Nay, by Allah.”

قالَ : فَتَمنَعُني مِن بَيتِ رَبّي أعبُدُهُ فيهِ حَتّى أموتَ ؟

Abu Dharr said: “You prevent me from going to the House of my Lord to worship Him until I die.”

قالَ : إي وَاللّهِ .

`Uthman said: “Yes, by Allah.”

 قالَ : فَإِلَى الشّامِ ؟

Abu Dharr said: “To Syria?”

قالَ : لا وَاللّهِ .

`Uthman said: “Nay, by Allah.”

 قالَ : البَصرَةِ ؟

Abu Dharr said: “Then to Basra?”

قالَ : لا وَاللّهِ ، فَاختَر غَيرَ هذِهِ البُلدانِ .

`Uthman said: “Nay, by Allah. Choose a place other than these two.”

 قالَ : لا واللّهِ ،

Abu Dharr said: “No, by Allah,

ما أختارُ غيرَ ما ذَكَرتُ لَكَ ،

I will not choose anything other than what I have mentioned to you;

ولَو تَرَكتَني في دارِ هِجرَتي ما أرَدتُ شَيئا مِنَ البُلدانِ ،

if you dismiss me to my place of migration [Medina], I will not desire any other city.

فَسَيِّرني حَيثُ شِئتَ مِنَ البِلادِ .

So, send me to any place you wish.”

 قالَ : فَإِنّي مُسَيِّرُكَ إلَى الرَّبَذَةِ .

`Uthman said: “Then I will send you to al-Rabadha.”

قالَ : اللّهُ أكبَرُ ! صَدَقَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ؛

Abu Dharr said: “Allah is Greater! The Messenger of Allah  (SA) has indeed spoken the truth.

قَد أخبَرَني بِكُلِّ ما أنَا لاقٍ .

He informed me about whatever I will face.”

 قالَ عُثمانُ : وما قالَ لَكَ ؟ !

`Uthman said: “And what did he say to you?”

قالَ : أخبَرَني بِأَنّي اُمنَعُ عَن مَكَّةَ وَالمَدينَةِ ،

Abu Dharr said: “He informed me that I would be prevented from going to Mecca or Medina,

وأموتُ بِالرَّبَذَةِ ،

and that I would die in al- Rabadhah,

ويَتَوَلّى مُواراتي نَفَرٌ مِمَّن يَرِدونَ مِنَ العِراقِ نَحوَ الحِجازِ .

where people on their way from Iraq to al-Hijaz would bury me.”

 وبَعَثَ أبو ذَرٍّ إلى جَمَلٍ لَهُ ،

Abu Dharr then sent for his camel

فَحَمَلَ عَلَيهِ امرَأَتَهُ ، وقيلَ : ابنَتَهُ .

and put his wife [or his daughter] on it.

وأمَرَ عُثمانُ أن يَتَجافاهُ النّاسُ حَتّى يَسيرَ إلَى الرَّبَذَةِ .

`Uthman ordered that people should keep away from him until he goes to al-Rabadhah.

 فَلَمّا طَلَعَ عَنِ المَدينَةِ ـ ومَروانُ يُسَيِّرُ]هُ[ عَنها ـ طَلَعَ عَلَيهِ عَلِيُّ بنُ أبي طالِبٍ رضى الله عنه ، ومَعَهُ ابناهُ الحَسَنُ وَالحُسَينُ ، وعَقيلٌ أخوهُ ، وعَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ جَعفَرٍ ، وعَمّارُ بنُ ياسِرٍ .

When he left Medina accompanied by Marwan, Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS), his two sons Hasan and Husain, his brother `Aqil, `Abdullah ibn Ja`far and `Ammar ibn Yasir were there to bid him farewell.

 فَاعتَرَضَ مَروانُ ، فَقالَ :

Marwan opposed, saying:

يا عَلِيُّ ، إنَّ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ قَد نَهَى النّاسَ أن يَصحَبوا أبا ذَرٍّ في مَسيرِهِ ويُشَيِّعوهُ ،

“O Ali, the Commander of the faithful has forbidden people from accompaning Abu Dharr on his journey and from seeing him off;

فَإِن كُنتَ لَم تَدرِ بِذلِكَ فَقَد أعلَمتُكَ !

if you do not know, I have now informed you.”

 فَحَمَلَ عَلَيهِ عَلِيُّ بنُ أبي طالِبٍ بِالسَّوطِ ،

Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) went forward to attack Marwan with his whip

وضَرَبَ بَينَ اُذُنَي راحِلَتِهِ ،

and hit the animal Marwan was riding on,

وقالَ : تَنَحَّ ، نَحّاكَ اللّهُ إلَى النّارِ .

saying: “Move aside, may Allah drag you to Hell.”

 ومَضى مَعَ أبي ذَرٍّ فَشَيَّعَهُ ،

He proceeded with Abu Dharr to escort him

ثُمَّ وَدَّعَهُ وَانصَرَفَ .

and bid him farewell, and then went away.

 فَلَمّا أرادَ عَلِيٌّ الاِنصِرافَ بَكى أبو ذَرٍّ ، وقالَ :

When Ali went away, Abu Dharr began to cry, and then said:

رَحِمَكُمُ اللّهُ أهلَ البَيتِ ،

“May Allah have mercy on you the Ahlul Bayt.

إذا رَأيتُكَ يا أبَا الحَسَنِ ووُلدَكَ ذَكَرتُ بِكُم رَسولَ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله .

O Abu al-Hasan, when I see you and your children, I remember the Messenger of Allah (SA).

 فَشَكا مَروانُ إلى عُثمانَ ما فَعَلَ بِهِ عَلِيّ بنُ أبي طالِبٍ ،

Marwan complained to `Uthman about what Ali ibn Abi Talib did to him,

فقالَ عُثمانُ :

so `Uthman said:

يا مَعشَرَ المُسلِمينَ ! مَن يَعذِرُني مِن عَلِيٍّ ؟

“O people, what shall I do with Ali?

رَدَّ رَسولي عَمّا وَجَّهتُهُ لَهُ ، وفَعَلَ كَذا ،

He sent back my messenger, and he did such and such.

وَاللّهِ لَنُعطِيَنَّهُ حَقَّهُ !

By Allah, we will give him what he deserves.

 فَلَمّا رَجَعَ عَلِيٌّ اِستَقبَلَهُ النّاسُ ، فَقالوا لَهُ :

When Ali came back, the people said to him:

إنَّ أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَليكَ غَضبانُ ؛

“The Commander of the Faithful is angry with you,

لِتَشييعِكَ أبا ذَرٍّ .

because you escorted Abu Dharr.”

فَقالَ عَلِيٌّ : «غَضَبُ الخَيلِ عَلَى اللُّجُمِ» .

Ali said: “The anger of the horse is over the rein.”

 فَلَمّا كانَ بِالعَشِيِّ جاءَ إلى عُثمانَ ، فَقالَ لَهُ :

When night came, Ali went to `Uthman, who in turn said to him:

ما حَمَلَكَ عَلى ما صَنَعتَ بِمَروانَ !

“What made you do what you did to Marwan?

ولِمَ اجتَرَأتَ عَلَيَّ ، ورَدَدتَ رَسولي وأمري ؟ !

Why did you send back my messenger and disobey my command?”

 قالَ : أمّا مَروانُ ؛

Ali said: “As for Marwan,

فَإِنَّهُ استَقبَلَني يَرُدُّني ، فَرَدَدتُهُ عَن رَدّي .

he stood in front of me to prevent me, so I kept him off.

وأمّا أمرُكَ فَلَم أرُدَّهُ .

As for your command, I did not disobey it.”

 قال عُثمانُ : أ لَم يُبلِغكَ أنّي قَد نَهَيتُ النّاسَ عَن أبي ذَرٍّ وعَن تَشييعِهِ ؟

`Uthman said: “Did you not know I had forbidden the people from bidding Abu Dharr farewell?

 فَقالَ عَلِيٌّ :

Ali said:

أوَكُلُّ ما أمَرتَنا بِهِ مِن شَيءٍ

“Do we have to follow whatever you command us to do

نَرى طاعَةَ اللّهِ وَالحَقَّ في خِلافِهِ اتَّبَعنا فيهِ أمرَكَ ! !

while we believe that they are contrary to the obedience to God and the compliance with the Truth?!

بِاللّهِ لا نَفعَلُ .

By Allah, we will not do so.”

 قالَ عُثمانُ : أقِد مَروانَ .

`Uthman said: “Let Mawran retaliate against you.”

 قالَ : ومِمَّ أُقيدُهُ ؟

Ali said: “Which retaliation?”

 قالَ : ضَرَبتَ بَينَ اُذُنَي راحِلَتِهِ ، وشَتَمتَهُ ،

`Uthman said: “You hit the head of the animal he was riding on, and you swore at him,

فَهُوَ شاتِمُكَ وضارِبٌ بَينَ اُذُنَي راحِلَتِكَ .

so he will swear at you and hit the animal you ride on.”

 قالَ عَلِيٌّ : أمّا راحِلَتي فَهِيَ تِلكَ ،

Ali said: “As for the animal I ride on, it is right there,

فَإِن أرادَ أن يَضرِبَها كَما ضَرَبتُ راحِلَتَهُ فَليَفعَل ،

so if he wishes to hit it, let him do so.

وأمّا أنَا فَوَاللّهِ لَئِن شَتَمَني لَأَشتَمَنَّكَ أنتَ مِثلَها بِما لا أكذِبُ فيهِ ،

As for me, by Allah, if he swears at me, I will swear at you,

ولا أقولُ إلّا حَقّا .

and I only speak the truth.

 قالَ عُثمانُ : ولِمَ لا يَشتِمُكَ إذا شَتَمتَهُ ؟ ! ،

`Uthman said: “And why can he not swear at you when you swore at him,

فَوَاللّهِ ما أنتَ عِندي بِأَفضَلَ مِنهُ !

for by Allah, in my view, you are not better than him.”

 فَغَضِبَ عَلِيُّ بنُ أبي طالِبٍ ، وقالَ :

Ali ibn Abi Talib became angry and said:

ألِيَ تَقولُ هذَا القَولَ ؟ !

“Do you speak to me like this?”

وبِمَروانَ تَعدِلُني ! !

And are you considering me equal to Marwan?

فَأَنَا وَاللّهِ أفضَلُ مِنكَ !

By Allah, I am even better than you!

وأبي أفضَلُ مِن أبيكَ !

My father is better than your father,

واُمّي أفضَلُ مِن اُمِّكَ !

and my mother is better than your mother.

وهذِهِ نَبلي قد نَثلَتُها  ،

This is my nobility that I have shown to you,

وهَلُمَّ فَانثُلْ بِنَبلِكَ .

so show me your nobility.”

 فَغَضِبَ عُثمانُ ،

`Uthman got angry

وَاحمَرَّ وَجهُهُ ،

and his face turned red.

فَقامَ ودَخَلَ دارَهُ .

He then stood up and entered his house.

وَانصَرَفَ عَلِيٌّ ، فَاجتَمَعَ إلَيهِ أهلُ بَيتِهِ ،

Ali left, and his household gathered around him,

ورِجالٌ مِنَ المُهاجِرينَ وَالأَنصارِ .

along with men from the Muhajirin and the Ansar.

 فَلَمّا كانَ مِنَ الغَدِ وَاجتَمَعَ النّاسُ إلى عُثمانَ شَكا إلَيهِم عَلِيّا ،

When the next day came, people gathered around `Uthman, and he complained to them about Ali.

وقالَ : إنَّهُ يَعيبُني ويُظاهِرُ مَن يَعيبُني ـ يُريدُ بِذلِكَ أبا ذَرٍّ وعَمّارَ بنَ ياسِرٍ وغَيرَهُما ـ .

He said: “He disgraces me and supports those who disgrace me –referring to Abu Dharr, `Ammar ibn Yasir and others–.”

فَدَخَلَ النّاسُ بَينَهُما ، حَتّى اصطَلَحا ،

The people intervened and tried to reconcile between them.

وقالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ : وَاللّهِ ،

Ali said to him: “By Allah,

ما أرَدتُ بِتَشييعِ أبي ذَرٍّ إلّا اللّهَ تَعالى .

I escorted Abu Dharr only to seek reward from Allah the Almighty.”

184. أنساب الأشراف عن أبي مِخنَفـ في إسنادِهِ ـ:

184. Ansab al-Ashraf, narrating from Abu Mikhnaf, who said –in his chain of transmission–:

كانَ في بَيتِ المالِ بِالمَدينَةِ سَفَطٌ فيهِ حُلِيٌّ وجَوهَرٌ ،

“There was a receptacle in the Muslim Treasury of Medina full of jewellery and precious stones,

فَأَخَذَ مِنهُ عُثمانُ ما حَلّى بِهِ بعضَ أهلِهِ ،

so `Uthman took what he wished from it and gave it to his family members.

فَأَظهَرَ النّاسُ الطَّعنَ عَلَيهِ في ذلِكَ

The people expressed their displeasure to him

وكَلَّمُوهُ فيهِ بِكَلامٍ شَديدٍ

and spoke to him with harsh words

حَتّى أغضَبوهُ ،

until they angered him.

فَخَطَبَ فَقالَ : لَنأخُذَنَّ حاجَتَنا مِن هذَا الفَيءِ

So, he delivered a sermon, saying: “We will take whatever we need from the Muslim Treasury,

وإن رَغِمَت اُنوفُ أقوامٍ .

even though people are averse to it.”

 فَقالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ : إذا تُمنَعُ مِن ذلِكَ ويُحالُ بَينَكَ وبَينَهُ .

Ali said to him: “Then, you will be prevented and hindered from it.”

 وقالَ عَمّارُ بنُ ياسِرٍ : اُشهِدُ اللّهَ أنَّ أنفي أوَّلُ راغِمٍ مِن ذلِكَ .

`Ammar ibn Yasir said: “I bear whitness to Allah that I am the first to oppose.”

 فَقالَ عُثمانُ : أعَلَيَّ يَابنَ المَتكاءِ !

`Uthman said: “O son of the uncircumcised woman,

تَجتَرِئُ ؟

are you standing against me?

خُذوهُ ،

Catch him!”

فَاُخِذَ ودَخَلَ عُثمانُ فَدَعا بِهِ فَضَرَبَهُ حَتّى غُشِيَ عَلَيهِ ،

They held him, and `Uthman came in. He called for `Ammar and began to beat him until he fell unconscious.

ثُمَّ اُخرِجَ فَحُمِلَ حَتّى اُتِيَ بِهِ مَنزِلَ اُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوجِ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله

He was then taken out and carried to the house of Um Salamah, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (SA);

فَلَم يُصَلِّ الظُّهرَ وَالعَصرَ وَالمَغرِبَ ،

as he was unconscious he could not pray noon, afternoon and evening prayers.

فَلَمّا أفاقَ تَوَضَّأَ وصَلّى وقالَ :

When he woke up, he performed the ablution and prayed, and said:

الحَمدُ للِّهِ ، لَيسَ هذَا أوَّلَ يَومٍ اُوذينا فيهِ فِي اللّهِ . . . .

 “Praise be to Allah, this is not the first day we have been hurt for the sake of Allah....

 وبَلَغَ عائِشَةَ ما صُنِعَ بِعَمّارٍ ،

When A’ishah was informed about what happened to `Ammar,

فَغَضِبَت وأخرَجَت شَعرا مِن شَعرِ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ،

she got angry and took out a hair of the Messenger of Allah (SA),

وثَوبا مِن ثِيابِهِ ، ونَعلاً مِن نِعالِهِ ،

a piece of his clothes and one of his sandals,

ثُمَّ قالَت : ما أسرَع ما تَرَكتُم سُنَّةَ نَبِيِّكُم

and said: “How fast have you left the Sunnah of your Prophet.

وهذا شَعرُهُ وثَوبُهُ ونَعلُهُ ولَم يَبلَ بَعدُ ،

This is his hair, his dress and his sandal that have not yet become old.”

فَغَضِبَ عُثمانُ غَضَبا شَديدا حَتّى ما دَرى ما يَقولُ .

`Uthman became so angry that he did not know what to say.”

185. Ansab al-Ashraf, narrating from Abu Mikhnaf and `Awana, who said:

إنَّ عَبدَ اللّهِ بنَ مَسعودٍ حينَ ألقى مَفاتيحَ بَيتِ المالِ إلَى الوَليدِ بنِ عُقبَةَ

“When `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud threw the keys of the Muslim Treasury at al-Walid ibn `Uqbah,

قالَ : مَن غَيَّرَ غَيَّرَ اللّهُ ما بِهِ ،

he said: “He who alters [the laws of Allah], Allah will transform him,

ومَن بَدَّلَ أسخَطَ اللّهُ عَلَيهِ ،

and he who changes [the Prophetic Sunnah], Allah will detest him.

وما أرى صاحِبَكُم إلّا وقَد غَيَّرَ وبَدَّلَ ،

Your companion [the Caliph] has indeed altered and changed.

أ يُعزَلُ مِثلُ سَعدِ بنِ أبي وَقّاصٍ ويُولَّى الوَليدُ ؟

Is Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas dismissed and al-Walid is put in charge?”

وكانَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِكَلامٍ لا يَدَعُهُ وهُوَ :

Ibn Mas`ud never ceased to say:

إنَّ أصدَقَ القَولِ كتابُ اللّهِ ،

“The most truthful of words is the Book of Allah,

وأحسَنَ الهُدى هُدى مُحَمَّدٍ صلى الله عليه و آله ،

the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (SA),

وشَرَّ الاُمورِ مُحدَثاتُها ،

the worst of things are the innovations,

وكُلَّ مُحدَثٍ بِدعَةٌ ،

and every new thing is an innovation,

وكُلَّ بِدعَةٍ ضَلالَةٌ ،

and every innovation is misguidance,

وكُلَّ ضَلالَةٍ فِي النّارِ .

and every misguidance ends up with Hellfire.”

 فَكَتَبَ الوَليدُ إلى عُثمانَ بِذلِكَ وقالَ :

Al-Walid wrote to `Uthman about this and said:

إنَّهُ يَعيبُكَ ويَطعَنُ عَلَيكَ ،

“He is disgracing you and speaking ill of you.”

فَكَتَبَ إلَيهِ عُثمانُ يَأمُرُهُ بِإِشخاصِهِ ،

`Uthman wrote back to him ordering him to send Ibn Mas`ud [to Medina].

وشَيَّعَهُ أهلُ الكوفَةِ ،

When the people of Kufah escorted him,

فَأَوصاهُم بِتَقوَى اللّهِ ولُزومِ القُرآنِ ،

he advised them to adhere to piety and stick to the Qur’an.

فَقالوا لَهُ : جُزِيتَ خَيرا ؛

They said to him: “May you be rewarded with the best.

فَلَقَد عَلَّمتَ جاهِلَنا ،

You have taught the uneducated among us,

وثَبَّتَّ عالِمَنا ،

strengthened the educated among us,

وأقرَأتَنَا القُرآنَ ،

recited the Qur’an for us

وفَقَّهتَنا فِي الدّينِ ،

and taught us religion;

فَنِعَم أخُو الإِسلامِ أنتَ ونِعمَ الخَليلُ ،

you are an excellent brother in Islam and you are an excellent friend.”

ثُمَّ وَدَّعوهُ وَانصَرَفوا .

They bid farewell to him and then went away.

 وقَدِمَ ابنُ مَسعودٍ المَدينَةَ

Ibn Mas`ud entered Medina

وعُثمانُ يَخطُبُ عَلى مِنبَرِ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ،

while `Uthman was delivering a sermon on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (SA).

فَلَمّا رَآهُ قالَ :

When `Uthman saw him, he said:

ألا إنَّهُ قَدِمَت عَلَيكُم دُوَيبَةُ سوءٍ ،

“Verily a small evil crawling animal has come forward to you;

مَن تَمشِ عَلى طَعامِهِ يَقِئ ويَسلَح .

he who walks over its own food vomits and excretes.”

 فَقالَ ابنُ مَسعودٍ : لَستُ كَذلِكَ ،

Ibn Mas`ud said: “I am not such man,

ولكِنّي صاحِبُ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله يَومَ بَدرٍ ، ويَومَ بَيعَةِ الرِّضوانِ .

but I am the companion of the Messenger of Allah (SA) on the day of Badr and the allegiance of al-Rizwan.

 ونادَت عائِشَةُ : أي عُثمانُ !

A’ishah called out: “O `Uthman,

أ تَقولُ هذا لِصاحِبِ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله ؟

are you saying that to a companion of the Messenger of Allah (SA)?”

 ثُمَّ أمَرَ عُثمانُ بِهِ فَاُخرِجَ مِنَ المَسجِدِ إخراجا عَنيفا ،

`Uthman then ordered that Ibn Mas`ud be forcefully taken out of the mosque.

وضَرَبَ بِهِ عَبدُ اللّهِ بنُ زمعَةَ بنِ الاَسوَدِ بنِ المُطَّلِبِ بنِ أسَدِ بنِ عَبدِ العُزَّى بنِ قُصَي الأَرضَ ،

`Abdullah ibn Zama`a ibn al-Aswad ibn al- Muttalib ibn Asad ibn `Abd al-`Uzza ibn Qusai threw him upon the ground.

ويُقالُ : بَلِ احتَمَلَهُ يَحمومُ غُلامُ عُثمانَ ورِجلاهُ تَختَلِفانِ عَلى عُنُقِهِ ،

It is also said: Yahmum, a servant of `Uthman, held him high with his feet behind his neck

حَتّى ضَرَبَ بِهِ الأَرضَ ، فَدَقَّ ضِلعُهُ .

and then threw him upon the ground breaking his ribs.

 فَقالَ عَلِيٌّ : يا عُثمانُ !

Ali said: “O `Uthman,

أ تَفعَلُ هذا بِصاحِبِ رَسولِ اللّهِ صلى الله عليه و آله بِقَولِ الوَليدِ بنِ عُقبَةَ ؟

do you do that to the companion of the Messenger of Allah (SA) as a result of words by al-Walid ibn `Uqbah?”

 فَقالَ : ما بِقَولِ الوَليدِ فَعَلتُ هذا ،

`Uthman said: “I did not do that because of what al-Walid said,

ولكِن وَجَّهتُ زُبَيدَ بنَ الصَّلتِ الكَندِيَّ إلَى الكوفَةِ ،

but I sent Zubayd ibn al-Salt al-Kindi to Kufah,

فَقالَ لَهُ ابنُ مَسعودٍ : إنَّ دَمَ عُثمانَ حَلالٌ .

when Ibn Mas`ud said to him: “The shedding of `Uthman’s blood is permissible.”

 فَقالَ عَلِيٌّ : أحَلتَ مِن زُبَيدٍ عَلى غَيرِ ثِقَةٍ . . .

Ali said: “You considered it permissible because of what Zubayd said without confirming it.....”

وقامَ عَلِيٌّ بِأَمرِ ابنِ مَسعودٍ حَتّى أتى بِه مَنزِلَهُ ،

Ali then went to take care of Ibn Mas`ud and took him to his house.

فَأَقامَ ابنُ مَسعودٍ بِالمَدينَةِ

Ibn Mas`ud stayed in Medina,

لا يَأذَنُ لَهُ عُثمانُ فِي الخُروجِ مِنها إلى ناحِيَةٍ مِنَ النَّواحي ،

and `Uthman did not permit him to leave it for any other district.

وأرادَ حينَ بَرِئَ الغَزوَ ،

When Ibn Mas`ud recovered, he desired to participate in Jihad,

فَمَنَعَهُ مِن ذلِكَ .

but `Uthman prohibited him from doing so.

 وقالَ لَهُ مَروانُ : إنَّ ابنَ مَسعودٍ أفسَدَ عَلَيكَ العِراقَ ،

Marwan said to `Uthman: “Ibn Mas`ud has corrupted the people of Iraq against you,

أ فَتُريدُ أن يُفسِدَ عَلَيكَ الشّامَ ؟

so do you want him to corrup the people of Syria against you?”

 فَلَم يَبرَحِ المَدينَةَ حَتّى تُوُفِّيَ قَبلَ مَقتَلِ عُثمانَ بِسَنَتَينِ ،

Ibn Mas`ud stayed in Medina until he passed away, two years before the killing of `Uthman.

وكانَ مُقيما بِالمَدينَةِ ثَلاثَ سِنينَ .

He dwelt in Medina for three years.

وقالَ قومٌ : إنَّهُ كانَ نازِلاً عَلى سَعدِ بنِ أبي وَقّاصٍ .

Some said: “He was living in the house of Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas.

 ولَمّا مَرِضَ ابنُ مَسعودٍ مَرَضَهُ الَّذي ماتَ فيهِ أتاهُ عُثمانُ عائِدا

When Ibn Mas`ud became fatally ill, `Uthman came to visit him,

فَقالَ : ما تَشتَكي ؟

saying: “What troubles you?”

قالَ : ذُنوبي .

Ibn Mas`ud said: “My sins.”

 قالَ : فَما تَشتَهي ؟

`Uthman said: “What do you desire?”

قالَ : رَحمَةَ رَبّي .

Ibn Mas`ud said: “The mercy of my Lord.”

 قالَ : أ لا أدعو لَكَ طَبيبا ؟

`Uthman said: “Shall I call a physician for you?”

قالَ : الطَّبيبُ أمرَضَني .

Ibn Mas`ud said: “The physician made me sick.”

 قالَ : أ فَلا آمُرُ لَكَ بِعَطائِكَ ؟

`Uthman said: “Shall I order that something be given to you?”

قالَ : مَنَعتَنيهِ وأنَا مُحتاجٌ إلَيهِ ،

Ibn Mas`ud said: “You prevented it from me when I was in need of it,

وتُعطينيهِ وأنَا مُستَغنٍ عَنهُ ؟

and you desire now to give it to me when I am in no need of it?”

 قالَ : يَكونُ لِوُلدِكَ ،

`Uthman said: “It will be for your children.”

قالَ : رِزقُهُم عَلَى اللّهِ .

Ibn Mas`ud said: “Their sustenance is up to Allah.”

 قالَ : اِستَغِفر لي يا أبا عَبدِ الرَّحمنِ .

`Uthman said: “O Abu `Abd al-Rahman, seek forgiveness for me.”

قالَ : أسأَلُ اللّهَ أن يَأخُذَ لي مِنكَ بِحَقّي .

Ibn Mas`ud said: “I ask Allah that He take my right from you.”

 وأوصى أن لا يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيهِ عُثمانُ ،

Ibn Mas`ud then ordered that `Uthman should not pray over him.

فَدُفِنَ بِالبَقيعِ

He was buried in al-Baqi`,

وعُثمانُ لا يَعلَمُ ،

and `Uthman had no knowledge thereof;

فَلَمّا عَلِمَ غَضِبَ وقالَ :

when he came to know, he got angry and said:

سَبَقتُموني بِهِ ؟ !

 “You preceded me?”

فَقالَ لَهُ عَمّارُ بنُ ياسِرٍ : إنَّهُ أوصى أن لا تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيهِ ؛

`Ammar ibn Yasir said: “He ordered that you should not pray over him.”

وقالَ الزُّبَيرُ :

Al-Zubayr said (in verse):

 لَأَعرَفِنَّكَ بَعدَ المَوتِ تَندُبُني          

I know that you will mourn me after my death,

وفي حَياتيَ ما زَوَّدتَني زادي

When, during my life, you wonld not give me my provision.”
