If I survive, I will be the guardian of my blood,

so I may forgive or punish.

The Will of the Imam (AS)

Imam Ali (AS) enjoined on his children and visitors, in his last days, to do the following

540. Imam Ali’s (AS) Last Will to Hasan and Husain (AS)

“I enjoin you to be wary of God,

and not go after this world even though it may try to entice you.

Do not be sorry for anything you have missed in it.

Proclaim the truth,

work for the next world

and oppose the oppressor

and support the oppressed.

I enjoin on you (both), all my children, my family and whosoever my writing reaches too, to be wary of God and to keep your affairs in order and to maintain good relations among yourselves.

Indeed, I heard your grandfather (SA), say:

‘Reconciliation is better than all prayers and fastings.’

Fear God [in respect of] the orphans.

Do not feed their mouths for a day and starve them for a day.

Do not let them be ruined in your presence.

Fear God [in respect of] your neighbours.

Indeed, they are the will of your Prophet.

He continued to enjoin on us to do good to them

until we thought that he will make them heirs.

Fear God [in respect of] the Qur’an,

let not others surpass you in acting according to it.

Fear God [in respect of] prayers;

for indeed they are the pillars of your faith.

Fear God [in respect of] the House of your Lord;

let it not be deserted as long as you are alive;

for if it is deserted, you will not be granted respite.

Fear God [in respect of] struggle in His path, with your wealth, your souls and your tongues.

Keep to mutual communication and generosity.

Beware of mutual hostility and separation.

Do not abandon enioining good and forbidding evil or else,

the wicked among you would rule over you

and then you will call [upon God] but you will not be answered.

Then he said: ‘O sons of ‘Abd al-Muttalib!

Let me not find you shedding the blood of Muslims,

saying: the Commander of the Faithful was killed.

Do not kill save my killer.

If I die of this stroke,

then strike him one for one.

Do not mutilate the man,

for I have heard the Messenger of God say:

‘Beware of mutilation, even though it be a rabid dog.”

Visiting the Imam (AS)

541. Al-Amali by al-Mufid, reporting from Asbagh ibn Nubata, who said:

“When Ibn Muljam struck down the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS),

a group of our companions visited him in the morning,

including al-Harith, Suwayd ibn Ghafala, me, and another group

so we sat at the door.

When we heard the weeping, we wept.

So Hasan ibn Ali (AS) came out to us and said: The Commander of the Faithful says to you: ‘Return to your homes.’

So all the people left except me.

The wailing intensified from inside the house, so I wept. Hasan (AS) came out again and said:

‘Did I not tell you to leave?’

I said: ‘Nay, by God, O son of the Messenger of God,

my heart does not follow me,

nor are my feet able to carry me until I see the Commander of the Faithful, may God bless him.”

He said: Then he paused and entered. It was not long before he came out

and said to me: ‘Enter.’ I then entered on the Commander of the Faithful (AS)

and found that he was resting [on something],

his head bandaged with a pale headband,

he had bled profusely, and his face was pale.

I could not recognize which one was paler, his face or the headband.

So I leaned towards him, kissed him and cried.

He said to me: ‘Do not cry O Asbagh, for, by God, it is Paradise.’

So I said to him: ‘May I be your ransom.

I know full well that you do come home to Paradise.

I only weep because I am missing you, O’ Commander of the Faithful!”

Words of the Imam before His Death

542. Imam Ali (AS) said, shortly before his death:

“By God, I have never detested or denied death;

I have been like a night traveller who has reached the destination‚

or a seeker of water who has attained it‚

and a seeker who found [his lost items],

543. Rabi al-Abrar, reporting from Asma bint Umays who said:

“I was by Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) when Ibn Muljam struck him down.

He gave out a cry and then fell unconscious.

After a while, he regained consciousness and said:

‘Welcome! Welcome!

Praise belongs to God Who fulfilled His promise

and granted us Paradise.’

It was said to him: What do you see?

He said: This is the Messenger of God, my brother Jafar and my uncle Hamza.

The doors of the heaven are open

and the angels are descending greeting me and giving glad tidings.

This is Fatima whose maidens from among the houris are surrounding her,

and these are my dwelling places in Paradise.
