1160 - أدَبُ الصَّومِ‏

1160. THE ETIQUETTE OF FASTING

3726.رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : يقولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّوجلَّ مَن لَم تَصُمْ جَوارِحُهُ عن مَحارِمِي فلا حاجَةَ لي في أن يَدَعَ طَعامَهُ وشَرابَهُ مِن أجلِي .¹

3726.The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Allah, Mighty and Exalted, says, ‘He whose limbs do not fast by refraining from what I have prohibited, then there is no need for him to refrain from food and drink for My sake.’²

3727.الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الصِّيامُ اجتِنابُ المَحارِمِ كما يَمتَنِعُ الرجُلُ مِن الطَّعامِ والشَّرابِ .³

3727.Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Fasting is just as much keeping away from prohibited things as it is keeping away from food and drink.’⁴

3728.فاطمةُ الزَّهراءُ عليها السلام : ما يَصنَعُ الصائمُ بِصِيامِهِ إذا لَم يَصُنْ لِسانَهُ وسَمعَهُ وبَصَرَهُ وجوارِحَهُ ؟!⁵

3728. Fatima al-Zahra’ (AS) said, ‘What is the fasting person doing with his fast if he is not guarding his tongue, his hearing, his sight and his limbs [from sins]?!⁶

3729.الكافي عن محمّد بن مسلم : قالَ أبو عبدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام : إذا صُمتَ فَلْيَصُمْ سَمعُكَ وبَصَرُكَ وشَعرُكَ وجِلدُكَ وعَدَّدَ أشياءَ غَيرَ هذا، وقالَ : لا يكونُ يومُ صَومِكَ كَيَومِ فِطرِكَ .⁷

3729. Muhammad b. Muslim narrated, ‘Abu Abdillah (AS) [i.e. Imam al-Sadiq] said, ‘When you fast, your hearing must fast, along with your sight, your hair, your skin…’ and he listed a number of other things, and said, ‘The day that you fast must not be like a day that you do not fast.’⁸
