The Eve of the Nineteenth

535. Al-Irshad relates:

“It is reported that the Commander of the believers (AS), spent that night awake

and he frequently went out and looked up to the sky, saying:

‘By God, I have not lied nor have I been lied to.

It is the night which I was promised.’

Then he would return to his bed.

When dawn arose, he put on his wrapper [izar] and went out, saying:

Stiffen your breast for death.          Indeed, death will meet you.

Do not show grief at death.            When it arrives in your valley.

When he reached the courtyard of his house, the geese met him and hooted in his face.

[The people] began to drive them away but he said:

‘Leave them, for they are mourners [of my death].’

He (AS) then went out and was struck down.”

The Dawn of the Nineteenth

536. Tarikh al-Tabari, reporting from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, who said:

“By God, I was praying that night when Ali was struck in the Great Mosque,

among many men of the town dwellers,

who were praying near the threshold.

They were either standing in prayer, bowing down or in prostration.

They were not exhausted from the beginning of the night till its end,

when Ali came out for the Dawn Prayer.

He began calling out: ‘O people, Prayer! Prayer!’

I do not know whether he came out from the door

and said those words or not!

I noticed a glitter

and heard someone say:

‘Judgement belongs to God, O Ali, not to you, nor to your companions.’

I saw a sword,

then I heard Ali say:

‘Do not let the man escape from you’,

so people surrounded him from all sides.

He said: It was not long before Ibn Muljam was taken and brought in the presence of Ali.

I entered with those who had entered from among the people

and heard Ali say:

‘A soul for a soul.

If I die, then kill him as he has killed me.

If I remain [alive], I will consider my judgement on him.’ ”
