A Revaluation of Islamic Traditions

Joseph Schacht present some ideas of what he thinks, is a necessary revaluation of Islamic traditions in the light of our present Knowledge. Looking bach he cannot see what other result could possibly by consistent the very foundations of our historical and critical study of the first two or three centuries of Islam. One of these foundations, he thinks, is Goldziher,s discovery that the traditions from the Prophet and from his companions do not contain more or less authentic information on the earliest period of Islam to which they claim to belong, but reflect opinions held during the first two and a half centuries after the Hijra.

The Narrator of the Book Salim Ibn Qays

Aban Ibn Abi Ayyash is the only narrator of the Book Salim bn Qays. Every book can be investigated from two points: extrinsically and exoterically Exoteric criticism regards the work primarily in relation to the author himself. It often looks in the work for evidences of the particular temperament and experiences of the author who, consciously or unconsciously, has revealed himself in it.
To verify the reliability of the book, the author gives a biography of Aban Ibn Abi Ayyash. He also investigates Abi Ayyash,s views and thoughts as well as his personality.
