The Imām’s Sister
278. al-Ikhtisās: “Ali’s (a.s.) sister Umm Hāni, the daughter of Abu Tālib came to visit him and he gave her twenty dirhams.
Umm Hāni asked her non-Arab freed slave girl: “How much did the Commander of the Faithful give you?”
She said: “Twenty dirhams.”
Umm Hāni angrily returned [to Ali (a.s.)] and Ali (a.s.) said to her: “Go back! May God have Mercy on you! We did not find any precedence for Ismā`il (Ishmael) over Ishāq (Isaac) in the Book of God.”1

The Imām’s Maidservant
279. Al-Musannaf – narrating from Umm `Uthmān, a maidservant who had a son from Ali (a.s.): “I went to visit Ali (a.s.) and saw carnations before him scattered in the yard. I asked him to give some flowers to my daughter and he said: “Like this (gesturing with his hands meaning “show me a good one dirham”); because these belong to the Muslims, or wait until we receive our share, then I shall give a bunch to your daughter.”2
