351. al-Ikhtisās: Sa`id ibn Qays al-Hamadāni saw Ali (a.s.) near a wall on a hot day and he asked him: “O Commander of the Faithful! What are you doing here at this hour?”
He said: “I have not gone forth but to help an oppressed person or assist one who asks for help.”
At this time a woman who was disheartened and bewildered came towards him. She stopped before him and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! My husband has wronged me, harassed me and threatened to beat me. Come along with me to go to him.”
He lowered his head, then raised it and said: ‘By God, not until the right of the oppressed is secured without stammering. Where is your house?
She said in such and such a neighborhood.
He went along with the woman until they reached her house. The woman said: “This is my house.” [The narrator goes on to say] He greeted and then a man came out and he was wearing a long colorful garment. Ali (a.s.) told him: “Be wary of God! You have scared your wife.” The young man said: “Who are you to get involved? By God, I will burn her because of your words!”
[The narrator says:] Whenever he [Ali (a.s.)] went somewhere he would carry his whip in his hand and wear his sword. If someone was judged to be punished by whipping, he would whip him and if someone was judged to be punished with a sword, he would promptly carry it out.
All of a sudden the young man noticed that Ali (a.s.) had unsheathed his sword and was saying: “I am enjoining you to do good and refraining you from doing wrong and you are rejecting good? Repent! Or I will punish you.”
[The narrator says:] People from the nearby alleys came towards the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) and crowded before him. [At this time] The young man repented and said: “O Commander of the Faithful Forgive me! May God forgive you [too]! By God, [from now on] I will be like the ground for her to step on.”
Then he ordered the woman to go back to her house and he himself returned [home] too, while reciting: “There is no good in much of their secret talks, excepting him who enjoins charity or what is right or reconciliation between people….”¹
“Praise be to God who through me reconciled between a woman and her husband. God the Blessed and the Exalted says: “There is no good in much of their secret talks, excepting him who enjoins charity or what is right or reconciliation between people, and whoever does that, seeking God’s pleasure, soon We shall give him a great reward.”²

351. الاختصاص: إنَّ سَعيدَ بنَ القَيسِ الهَمدانِيَّ رَآهُ ] عَليّاً علیه السلام [يَوماً في شِدَّةِ الحَرِّ في فِناءِ حائِطٍ، فَقالَ: يا أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ! بِهذِهِ السّاعَةِ؟ قالَ: ما خَرَجتُ إلّا لاُِعينَ مَظلوماً أو اُغيثَ مَلهوفاً. فَبَينا هوَ كَذلِكَ إذ أتَتهُ امرَأَةٌ قَد خَلَعَ قَلبَها، لا تَدري أينَ تَأخُذُ مِنَ الدُّنيا حَتّى وَقَفَت عَلَيهِ، فَقالَت: يا أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ! ظَلَمَني زَوجي وتَعَدّى عَلَيَّ وحَلَفَ لَيَضرِبُني فَاذهَب مَعي إلَيهِ، فَطَأطَأَ رَأسَهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَهُ وهُوَ يَقولُ: لا وَاللهِ، حَتّى يُؤخَذَ لِلمَظلومِ حَقُّهُ غَيرَ مُتَعتَعٍ، وأينَ مَنزِلُكِ؟ قالَت: في مَوضِعِ كَذا وكَذا.
فَانطَلَقَ مَعَها حَتَّى انتَهَت إلى مَنزِلِها، فَقالَت: هذا مَنزِلي، قالَ: فَسَلَّمَ، فَخَرَجَ شابٌّ عَلَيهِ إزارٌ مُلَوَّنَةٌ، فَقالَ: اِتَّقِ اللهَ فَقَد أخَفتَ زَوجَتَكَ، فَقالَ: وما أنتَ وذاكَ؟وَاللهِ لاَُحرِقَنَّها بِالنّارِ لِكَلامِكَ.
قالَ: وكانَ إذا ذَهَبَ إلى مَكان أخَذَ الدِّرَّةَ بِيَدِهِ، والسَّيفُ مُعَلَّقٌ تَحتَ يَدِهِ، فَمَن حَلَّ عَلَيهِ حُكمٌ بِالدِّرَّةِ ضَرَبَهُ، ومَن حَلَّ عَلَيهِ حُكمٌ بِالسَّيفِ عاجَلَهُ، فَلَم يَعلَمِ الشّابُّ إلّا وقَد أصلَتَ السَّيفَ وقالَ لَهُ: آمُرُكَ بِالمَعروفِ وأنهاكَ عَنِ المُنكَرِ، وتَرُدُّ المُعروفَ! تُب وإلّا قَتَلتُكَ.
قالَ: وأقبَلَ النّاسُ مِنَ السِّكَكِ يَسأَلونَ عَن أميرِ المُؤمِنينَ علیه السلام حَتّى وَقَفوا عَلَيهِ، قالَ: فَاُسقِطَ في يَدِهِ¹ الشّابُّ، وقالَ: يا أميرَ المُؤمِنينَ، اعفُ عَنّي عَفا اللهُ عَنكَ، وَاللهِ لاََكونَنَّ أرضاً تَطَأُني، فَأَمَرَها بِالدُّخولِ إلى مَنزِلِها وَانكَفَأَ وهوَ يَقولُ: (لا خَيْرَ فِى كَثِيرٍ مِّن نَّجْوَئـٰهُمْ إِلّا مَنْ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ إِصْلَاحٍ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ).
الحَمدُ للهِ الَّذي أصلَحَ بي بَينَ مَرأَةٍ وزَوجِها، يَقولُ اللهُ تَبارَكَ وتَعالى: (لا خَيْرَ فِى كَثِيرٍ مِّن نَّجْوَئـٰهُمْ إِلّا مَنْ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ إِصْلَاحٍ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَ لِكَ ابْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللهِ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا)².³
