489. al-Kāfi – narrating from Mālik ibn A`yan: “The Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) exhorted the people in Siffin and said: “God Almighty and Exalted guided you to a transaction that will deliver you from painful torments and persuade you to good faith in God and the struggle in the path of God. And He has set aside as rewards for this the forgiveness of your sins and
pleasant abodes in the Garden of Eden. God the Exalted said: “Indeed God loves those who fight in His way in ranks, as if they were a compact structure.”¹
Then put the armored men forward and keep the unarmored ones behind. Grit your teeth because this will make the swords skip off the skull. Dodge on the sides of the spears for it better changes the direction of their blades. Cast down the eyes because it strengthens the spirit and gives peace to the heart. Kill the voices because it wards off defeat and is better for enhancing dignity.”²

489. الكافي عن مالك بن أعين: حَرَّضَ أميرُ المُؤمِنينَ صَلَواتُ اللهِ عَلَيهِ النّاسَ بِصِفّينَ، فَقالَ: إنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وجَلَّ دَلَّكُم عَلى تِجارَة تُنجيكُم مِن عَذاب أليم، وتُشفي¹ بِكُم عَلَى الخَيرِ، وَالإِيمانِ بِاللهِ، وَالجِهادِ في سَبيلِ اللهِ، وجَعَلَ ثَوابَهُ مَغفِرَةً لِلذَّنبِ، ومَساكِنَ طَيِّبَةً في جَنّاتِ عَدن، وقالَ عَزَّ وجَلَّ: (إِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَـتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُم بُنْيَـنٌ مَّرْصُوصٌ) .² فَسَوّوا صُفوفَكُم كَالبُنيانِ المَرصوصِ.
فَقَدِّمُوا الدّارِعَ، وأخِّرُوا الحاسِرَ، وعَضّوا عَلَى النَّواجِذِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أنبى لِلسُّيوفِ عَلَى الهامِ، وَالتَووا عَلى أطرافِ الرِّماحِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أموَرُ لِلأَسِنَّةِ، وغُضُّوا الأَبصارَ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أربَطُ لِلجَأشِ، وأسكَنُ لِلقُلوبِ، وأميتُوا الأَصواتَ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أطرَدُ لِلفَشَلِ، وأولى بِالوَقارِ.³
