Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 125

Selections from The Sayings and Preaching of Amir al-Muminin Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace Be Upon Him) Including His Replies to Questions and Maxims Expressed for Various Purposes.
Translated by Sayyid Ali Reza

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:

I am defining Islam as no one has defined before me:

Islam is submission,

submission is conviction,

conviction is affirmation,

affirmation is acknowledgement,

acknowledgement is discharge (of obligations),

and discharge of obligations is action.
