Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 145

Selections from The Sayings and Preaching of Amir al-Muminin Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace Be Upon Him) Including His Replies to Questions and Maxims Expressed for Various Purposes.
Translated by Sayyid Ali Reza

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:

There is many a person who fasts

whose fast is nothing but just hunger and thirst,

and many an offerer of prayers

whose prayer is no better than wakefulness and hardship.

The sleep as well as the eating and drinking of the intelligent (God-knowing) person is far better.
