Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 211

وَقَالَ (عليه ‏السلام):

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:

الْجُودُ حَارِسُ الْأَعْرَاضِ

Generosity is the protector of honour;

وَ الْحِلْمُ فِدَامُ السَّفِيهِ

forbearance is the bridle of the fool;

وَ الْعَفْوُ زَكَاةُ الظَّفَرِ

forgiveness is the levy of success;

وَ السُّلُوُّ عِوَضُكَ مِمَّنْ غَدَرَ

disregard is the punishment of him who betrays;

وَ الِاسْتِشَارَةُ عَيْنُ الْهِدَايَةِ

and consultation is the chief way of guidance.

وَ قَدْ خَاطَرَ مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى بِرَأْيِهِ

He who is content with his own opinion faces danger.

وَ الصَّبْرُ يُنَاضِلُ الْحِدْثَانَ

Endurance braves calamities

وَ الْجَزَعُ مِنْ أَعْوَانِ الزَّمَانِ

while impatience is a helper of the hardships of the world.

وَ أَشْرَفُ الْغِنَى تَرْكُ الْمُنَى

The best contentment is to give up desires.

وَ كَمْ مِنْ عَقْلٍ أَسِيرٍ تَحْتَ هَوَى أَمِيرٍ

Many a slavish mind is subservient to overpowering longings.

وَ مِنَ التَّوْفِيقِ حِفْظُ التَّجْرِبَةِ

Capability helps preservation of experience.

وَ الْمَوَدَّةُ قَرَابَةٌ مُسْتَفَادَةٌ

Love means well-utilized relationship.

وَ لَا تَأْمَنَنَّ مَلُولًا .

Do not trust one who is grieved.
