Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 254

Selections from The Sayings and Preaching of Amir al-Muminin Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace Be Upon Him) Including His Replies to Questions and Maxims Expressed for Various Purposes.
Translated by Sayyid Ali Reza

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:

O son of Adam,

be your own representative in the matter of your property

and do about it

whatever you want to be done with it after your death. 62

62. The meaning of it is that if a person desires that after his death a portion of his property should be spent on charity, he should not wait for his death but spend it wherever he desires even during his lifetime; for it is possible that after his death his successors may not act upon his will or he may not get an opportunity to will. A Persian couplet says: Give away money and property while you are living as after you it would be out of your control.
