Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 428

Selections from The Sayings and Preaching of Amir al-Muminin Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace Be Upon Him) Including His Replies to Questions and Maxims Expressed for Various Purposes.
Translated by Sayyid Ali Reza

وقال عليه السلام في بعض الاَعيَاد:

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said on the occasion of an 'Id (Muslim feast day):

إِنَّمَا هُوَ عِيدٌ لِمَنْ قَبلَ اللهُ صِيَامَهُ

It is an 'Id for him whose fasting Allah accepts

وَشَكَرَ قِيَامَهُ،

and of whose prayers He is appreciative;

وَكُلُّ يَوْمٍ لاَ يُعْصَى اللهُ فِيهِ

and (in fact) every day wherein no sin of Allah

فَهُوَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ.

is committed is an 'Id. 91

91. If feeling and conscience is alive even the remembrance of a sin destroys peace of mind because tranquility and happiness are achieved only when the spirit is free from the burden of sin and one’s robe is not polluted with disobedience. And this real happiness is not bound by time but on whatever day a man desires he can avoid sin and enjoy this happiness, and this very happiness will be the real happiness and the harbinger of ‘Id.
