30. Al-Irshad, narrating from `Abd al-Malik ibn Hisham, Muhammad ibn Ishaq and other traditionists (ashab al-athar), who said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) besieged Khaibar for more than twenty days.

At that time the banner was held by the Commander of the Faithful, (AS).

He was suffering from pain in his eyes which kept him from the battle [for a time].

The Muslims attacked the Jews in front of their forts and at the sides.

One day, they overcame the gate,

but they had dug a ditch around themselves.

Marhab came out on foot to oppose them in battle.

The Messenger of Allah (SA) summoned Abu Bakr and said to him:

 “Take the banner.”

He took it with a number of the Muhajirun

and strived without achieving anything.

He returned denouncing the people who had followed him, while they were just blaming him.

The next day he gave it to `Umar,

but he went a little way with it

and then came back accusing his followers of cowardice,

while they were also accusing him of cowardice.

Then the Prophet (SA) said:

“This banner was not in the hand of the person worthiest of holding it.

Bring me Ali ibn Abi Talib.”

It was said to him: “He has sore eyes.”

He (SA) said. “Show him to me, and you will show me a man who loves Allah and His Messenger

and whom Allah and His Messenger love.

He takes things up in the right way and he will not flee.”

They brought Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS), leading him to the Prophet (SA).

The Prophet (SA) asked him:

 “What is troubling you, Ali?”

He (AS) said: “Sore eyes which prevent me from seeing

and a pain in my head.”

The Prophet (SA) said:

“Sit down and put your head on my thigh.”

Ali, (AS) did that, and the Prophet (SA) prayed for him.

He spat some saliva into his hand and rubbed it on his eyes and his head.

His eyes opened, and the pain in the head which he had went away.

The Prophet (SA) had said in his prayer:

“O Allah, protect him against the heat and the cold.”

The Prophet (SA) then gave him the banner, and it was a white banner, and he said:

“Take the standard and set forth with it. Gabriel is with you.

Victory is in front of you and terror is spread into the hearts of the enemy.

Be aware, Ali, that they have found in their Book

that the name of the one who will destroy them is Aliya.

When you meet them, say:

“I am Ali, then they will forsake [the field] if Allah wishes… .”

It is reported in a tradition:

“When the Commander of the Faithful (AS) said:

“I am Ali ibn Abi Talib,”

one of the Rabbis of the people called out to them, saying:

“I swear by what was revealed unto Moses that you are defeated.”

As a result, such terror entered their hearts that they were not able to bear it.”

31. Sahih al-Bukhari, narrating from Sahl ibn Sa`d, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SA) said on the day of Khaibar:

“Tomorrow I will give this banner to a man with whose hands Allah will bring victory.

He loves Allah and His Messenger,

and Allah and His Messenger love him too.”

He [Sahl] said: “People then started to speak with each other throughout that night about the one to whom the banner will be given.

He (SA) said: “Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?”

They said: “He is suffering from a pain in his eyes.”

He (SA) said: “Bring him to me.”

He was brought, and the Messenger of Allah (SA) spat some saliva into his eyes and prayed for him.

He was cured, as if he had no pain.

The Prophet (SA) then gave him the banner.

Ali said: “O Messenger of Allah (SA),

I shall fight them until they become like us [Muslims]?”

He (SA) said: “Go at ease until you reach their field,

then invite them to Islam

and inform them of what is incumbent upon them of the rights of Allah in Islam;

for by Allah, if Allah guides one through you,

it is better for you than you should have red camels.” [A camel, and especially a red camel, is considered to be one of the most valuable possessions of the Arabs of that time.]

32. Al-Irshad:

“When the Commander of the Faithful (AS) killed Marhab,

those who had gone out with Marhab withdrew

and barred the gate of the fortress to keep him out.

The Commander of the Faithful (AS) advanced against it. He worked on it until he opened it.

However, most of the people from the other side of the ditch did not come across against him.

So, the Commander of the Faithful (AS) uprooted the gate of the fortress,

and then he used it as a bridge across the ditch

so that they might go across and conquer the fortress.

They seized the spoils.

When they withdrew from the fortress,

the Commander of the Faithful (AS) took the gate in his right hand and threw it many metres away.

It used to take twenty men to bolt that gate.199

33. Imam Ali (AS) said:

“By Allah, I did not uproot the gate of Khaibar

and destroy the stronghold of the Jews with physical power,

but it was with divine power.”
