Nahj al-Balagha Hadith n. 361

Selections from The Sayings and Preaching of Amir al-Muminin Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace Be Upon Him) Including His Replies to Questions and Maxims Expressed for Various Purposes.
Translated by Sayyid Ali Reza

Amir al-mu'minin, peace be upon him, said:

If you have a need from Allah, the Glorified,

then begin by seeking Allah's blessing on His Messenger, may Allah bless him and his descendants,

then ask your need,

because Allah is too generous to accept one (seeking His blessing on His Messenger) of the two requests made to Him

and deny the other.
