‘Are you quarrelling with Ali, or are you like him?’
He said: ‘Nay, by God,
I know he is better than I am and has better claim to the affair than I.’ ”

so he spoke well of him, his father and his mother.
He then said: ‘Why should I not say this about them?
They are the best of God’s creation,
and his sons are the pick of the human race.’ ”

he was having an afternoon nap with his wife, daughter of QaraÛah, on a summer day, so he said:
‘To God we belong and unto Him is our return.
What have they lost of knowledge, good, virtue and comprehension [of religion]?’
His wife said: ‘Yesterday you would speak ill of him and today you retain a good impression of him!’
He said: ‘Woe unto you!
You do not know what they have lost of his knowledge, excellence and precedence.’ ”

‘O Abu Abdillah, indeed I call you to fight this man, who has disobeyed his Lord,
and killed the Caliph,
sowed dissension,
divided the community
and severed the family ties.’
Amr said: ‘To fight whom?’
He said: ‘To fight Ali.’
Amr said: ‘By God, O Muawiyah, you and Ali are not equals;
you do not enjoy his migration, precedence,
companionship, striving [in the path of God],
comprehension [of religion] and knowledge.
By God, he has also sharpness, earnestness,
good fortune, preference
and standing the test from God.
What will you grant me if I support you in fighting him
when you know the peril that lies in this action?’
He said: ‘What is your opinion?’
He said: ‘Egypt is enough.’ ”

Al-Hasan said to him:
‘Woe unto you O Marwan!
Is the one whom you are reviling the most wicked of people?’
He said: ‘No, but he is the best of people.’ ”

“One day al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik said to his sons:
‘O my sons, adhere to religion.
For indeed I have not seen religion building anything which the world has destroyed.
I have seen the world building a building which religion has destroyed.
I never cease to hear our followers and family members revile Ali ibn Abi Talib,
bury his merits and force the people to hate him,
but it would only bring the hearts closer [to him].
They strive to make themselves closer to the spirits of the people,
yet it only increases their distance from them.”

“My father once delivered a sermon.
He kept on his sermon until, when he made mention of Ali (AS) and began to revile him,
I noticed that he stuttered, his face become pale and his condition changed.
I spoke to him about that,
so he said: ‘Did you notice that?
If those around us had known about Ali what your father knows, none of them would have followed us.’ ”
